I just got Netflix not long ago. I know I'm a dinosaur. I'm imagining other peeps have it as well. I thought it would be neat to have a thread to recomend
anything you've seen.
Flix I liked
127 Hours
True wilderness survival story about Aron Ralston (James Franco) about a weekend trip in Utah that goes wrong. Don't read the description of it in netflix it's a total spoiler.
Breaking Bad
I'm happy I stumbled across this little gem. Straight laced chemistry teacher who discovers he has cancer and turns to operating a meth lab in order to ensure his family is taken care of. I can't remember the last time I watched something with such great character development and exciting plot twists, real gritty and has a lot of WTF or oh shit moments.
Lemmy
If your a fan of Motorhead this is must see. Although they make it appear that that Lemmy is as tough as nails they obviously play it up, otherwise he probably would of went through 3 liver transplants by now. But it documents well the type of person he is, a little disturbing , a little bravado.
just got Netflix as well. one of the first things I watched was " Dear Zachary : A Letter to a son about his father". a very good documentary about newfoundlands fucked up justice system.
Boondocks - Aaron McGruder's popular comic strip characters jump into the Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim," where they play out their dramas in this edgy animated series about a man who moves his two grandsons to the suburbs. After he's named the legal guardian of Huey and Riley (voiced by Regina King), Robert "Grandad" Freeman (John Witherspoon) moves them from their rough Chicago neighborhood to "The Boondocks." But the transplanted twosome vow to be miserable.
Fog of War - Interview with Robert McNamara
IT Crowd - British Comedy, kinda like Big Bang Theory
Better Off Ted - Veridian Technologies' research and development chief, the very ethical Ted (Jay Harrington), continues his quest to keep the company on the straight and narrow when his bosses have decidedly different ideas.
Hiroshima: BBC History of World War II - Documentary from the point of view of the citizens of Hiroshima.
Moon - A man is hired as a solitary worker on the moon, as the time comes close for his replacement to arrive things become complicated.
Exam - In this psychological thriller, eight job applicants in a guarded, windowless room are given instruction, exams and 80 minutes to answer one discerning question that may win them a prime position. But they soon discover this is no ordinary test.
Dead Like Me - After an 18 year old girl dies, she finds she has been made into a Grim Reaper. She along with a band of other reapers, have to go about waiting for people to die in order to being their souls to the after life.
Lucky Number Slevin - While checking out his missing friend Nick's apartment, Slevin (Josh Hartnett) is mistaken for Nick by thugs and forced to participate in a high-profile murder for a powerful crime boss (Morgan Freeman), making it all too clear how much trouble Nick's actually in. Ben Kingsley, Stanley Tucci, Lucy Liu and Bruce Willis co-star in this noir crime thriller from director Paul McGuigan, who previously teamed with Hartnett for Wicker Park.
I could go on and on and on and on, but these should keep ya busy for a while.
I don't know if it's on Netflix, but if you are a fan of scary movies "A Tale of Two Sisters" is a must-see. Korean w/English subtitles.
Great picks Guy.
I would recommend:
Newsradio-needs no explanation IMO
This Film is Not Yet Rated - A neat documentary about the MPAA and they way they rate movies
IP Man 1&2 - Awesome martial arts flms from China.
Top Gear - If you don't watch it already....
Jeremiah--Survivors of a plague that killed all Adults have grown up and are trying to rebuild the world
Dollhouse--People sign contracts to become "Dolls". Unique Personalities are downloaded into them and they are contracted out to clients who use them for various purposes. At first the show seems to focus on the various tasks the Main Character(a Doll) is tasked to do each episode, but soon a common thread begins to reveal an insidious sub plot.
Firefly/Serenity(movie based off Firefly)--Cowboys in space. Excellent, albeit short, Adventure series.
Survivors--British series about survivors of a plague that wipes out >99% of the population.
====
the above were Science Fiction series that were cancelled prematurely. All except Dollhouse have incomplete closure. Dollhouse had time to cobble together a decent finale.
Walking Dead--Zombies
Breaking Bad++
Top Gear is also worth watching if you like Cars and have never seen this show. Nothing like North American Auto shows, it's actually entertaining. Also filled with Exotic cars.
Dollhouse is one of Joss Whedon best series, like Buffy, it was pretty original and you get to see a lot of his favorite actors make cameos.
Super High Me
Snatch...fairly old but good.
Flame and Citron.
Danish movie. I'm obviously biased but I loved it. True story of a couple resistance members in Copenhagen during the Nazi occupation. Great story and beautifully shot and costumed.
There are some good old Doctor Who's there too. Stuff we never got on this side of the pond.
As a compliment to the newer Doctor Who's, Netflix also has "Torchwood" (anagram of Doctor Who). Pretty unique story lines, and a good Sci-Fi show, as well as a decent drama.
