How many Hollywood actors would pay out of their pocket to make a movie? NONE
What about Sylvester Stallone and Robert deNiro and COP LAND, to name one...
And yes Mr. Gibson did pour a lot of his heart (and money) into that film.
But in the end it is for the money.

Dont you know that they are only compassionit to people who think like they do. If you dont they send you to Siberia in good communist fashion.
The Passion was a great movie it depicted properly was Jesus went though for us.

COP LAND now that’s a stretch for them
And it’s called a back loaded contract. Many films are made that way. Principal is paid off the sales not upfront. just ask Tom Cruse, Arnold, Tom Hanks..............
