Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Why deep space nine? I think The Next Generation is much better.
The Next Generation was too...one show focused. It wasn't realistic at all. Deep Space Nine has a much more epic, and darker feel to it...and I believe a more realistic approach to how humans will be in space.
Also, characters that were planned to be minor, like Garak, Rom, and Nog, were really fleshed out to be realistic, and sometimes critical parts to the story. Rom, for example, was the idiot brother to Quark at the beginning, and basically not important. In the end, he turns into the Grand Nagus of the Ferengi, and in some ways show how humans can be nobodies, to turn into major, important figures. Garak is also like this.
Also, I think the study of what were commonly seen as stereotypical, or barely seen races were also fleshed out, sticking to only creating a few new species, instead of a new species every week. The Ferengi, Cardassians, Bajoran, Klingon, and Trill become believable races, instead of stereotypes or an extra, alien species to pretend that the Federation isn't just human.
Plus, the plot was darker. The Federation, or even the main characters were shown to have flaws, quirks, and most importantly, lives. Sisko is just as much a father to Jake, and a son to Joseph Sisko, as he is a Federation captain and a religious figure. Quark, well, was shown to be more than some greedy Ferengi, but actually showing love, respect, bravery, wisdom and other very human emotions. Plus, the episode known as "In the Pale Moonlight" shows that the Federation doesn't have a monopoly on wisdom, or righteousness.
But TNG was more like the first one. It deal with real issues as well. Wharf, Klingon issues and his place in the federation. Idea of "otherness" one of the great issues of Human history. The show was on for Seven season and it do not create that many new races. It is true the plot was dark in DS9 and the space battles were much better, but so much of DS9 was based on thing that type in TNG. TNG had Q... It also dealt with ideas of humaness and what that means (Data) Plus it had Patrick Stewart who is the best Captain heads down.

Lol DS9 had Q too. I only think for one episode, but seeing him get punched in the face by Sisko made it great.
Worf did start on TNG, yes, but his character became much more fleshed out in the latter seasons of Deep Space Nine, and many of the Klingon's traditions and beliefs are also shown, the funniest being the Klingon bachelor party.
I agree that Data made TNG a great show, but the fact is that every other character is too perfect. Picard basically made no mistakes, and Riker was always loyal. In Deep Space Nine, Sisko made some errors, and compromised his beliefs at some points for the greater good. And Kira, especially in the beginning, was very backstabbing.
I think the greatest thing about Deep Space Nine is that it showed humans to still be acting like today humans, instead of the glamorized version of TNG. Nobody can always take the moral high road throughout their entire career, especially when you're in a military outfit.

On the surface, I liked TNG. Reading the books and looking back on it, the story-line was disjointed and full of plot-holes. I agree that DS9 was better in their portayal of humans. Patrick Stewart really carried the dynamics of TNG, along with Troy's revealing attire
I think that TNG really helped re-energize the SciFi genre on TV.
Except for the eye-candy of 7-of-9, Voyager was a sad, sad attempt at continuing the S.T. name.
