Second World War Soldier to be re-interred

27 September 2012

A re-interment ceremony will be held at Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery in the Netherlands on Wednesday October 3rd for Private Lewis Curtis of the 5th Battalion The Wiltshire Regiment.

Private Curtis, who came from Liskeard in Cornwall, was killed on October 2nd 1944 in an artillery barrage in the aftermath of Operation Market Garden.

His body was found in 2003 at de Laar Farm to the south of Arnhem. He was identified in 2008 by the Dutch Army Recovery Team using dental records.

The re-interment service will begin at 10 am and it will be attended by his niece and nephew and their families. Private Curtis will be accorded full military honours by The Honour Guard of The 5th Battalion The Rifles. The Royal Netherlands Army National Reserve Band will provide the music.

This is the Hartenstein Hotel, used as Divisional HQ during Market Garden.

It is now a museum, it has one of the best exhibits I have ever seen.

'The Airborne experience'.. in the basement.

If you ever get the chance, go and see it. [B-o]



Last thing to do, a drive over the John Frost Bridge in Arnhem. :)

Was there in 2008. Didn't make it out to the Hartenstien but found a little museum just under the approaches to the bridge. There was also a little old guy there who gave us his first hand experience of being in Arnhem as a 10 year old kid, watching the airborne troops land, very moving.

My aunt and uncle took my cousin and I to several memorials across Holland and France in 1977. Both of us were too young, at 10 yrs of age, to appreciate the fact that we stood on holy ground sanctified by the blood of the fallen.
