American Apparel is best known for basic cotton wear and the minimal design of their clothing. In the last few years AA has become quite popular and more than a few people i know own at least a couple pieces from AA if not half a closet full. i frequently find myself on their website looking for new items and online shopping.

While recently browsing their website i noticed that their photographs of models in the clothing are leaning more and more toward the "sex sells" image. Although their advertisements and photographs have always been a bit on the risky side, it has always been done somewhat tasteful and not enough to make me wonder. i notice now that they aren't stopping at somewhat risky they are taking it all the way to borderline pornographic.

i suppose with their clothing being so simple without complicated design they must find a way to make the advertising "noticeable". They were noticed and if they were trying to make their ads controversial too they have definitely succeeded.

Awww yes.....in my opinion...it leans too far to the porn side. The one with the girl spread eagle and the one, "Not safe for CKA" (Thank you for that BTW) are more porn than selling cloths. There are XXX sites where you can go to look at this if you desire to, you shouldn't have to while shopping.

It is also using the age old adage, "You too can look just like this if you wear our cloths". Sorry, not all woman look like that and far too many young girls, who will never be able to look like a bone-rack model, will almost kill themselves (or actually succeed in killing themselves) to attain this look.

The difference is that WW swim wear is rather sexy to begin with, that is the nature of what they are selling. AA took basic cotton wear and are selling it through way over the top sexy ads.

Try the Caribbean. You won't find too many WW suits on the shores of our Canadian beaches.

The call to action for all these ads is indeed to get peoples attention. But then what? The brand awareness has little to do with what they actually sell.
