An interesting article.
Grits already conceding
The part I find really interesting is this:
Did anyone else see this coming?
Liberals feel that Canada is always theres to govern, even when their not in power they'll find a way to somehow get back on top. If calling an election will do it, then expect Martins Liberals to call another election. It sucks to be the Liberals if the election results call for a majority government though. Personally, I don't want Canada to turn out like the US, so I'd rather have another election in due time. For now I guess we'll have to give Harper a chance at running Canada, and I bet my shiny nickel that he screws up...badly.
Given that most of Harper's policies are at odds with all three other parties, it is doubtful that his minority will last very long. The closest to him ideologically are the Liberals and given the animosity between those two parties, Harper is unlikely to find much support there.
I think the Liberals will be cooperative until they choose a new leader and he gets relatively established, then the government will fall. We could have two elections in 2006.
think joe clark if Stephen Harper tries to govern as though he has a majority...
How can there be another election soon when the Liberal party will be without a leader? If you think Martin will last, you're kidding yourself.
It'll take some time to rebuild the party.
It would not be smart to call another election, too much money, and no one would care.
actually i think the left wing of the libs will join the ndp or the greens and the right wing the cons or the greens and mayby a few diehards will stay on as libs. Wait this is only me dream nvm.
Honestly, I'd like to see more than 3 years under a minority so we can have proof it will work in the current day. I'm unconvinced that it can though.
the dying Liberals would have thrown their support behind the NDP candidates in hopes that would make a difference. If they are clever the voters still will.
A lot of people are hoping for that, Fig. Not a lot are counting on it though. Mostly we're just trying to stop a haemorrhage to the Liberals of people terrified of Harper.
I am disgusted with the Liberal party in general. I am also fearful that people will give their votes to parties which have no chance of winning any seats instead of making them count.
If the Liberals hadn't sunk so low I would promote tossing the vote to them to stem the Conservatives. If they had Trudeau yet.... God; there was a LEADER.
If it is a conservative minority gov, Martin is gone. The Liberals will have a leadership race in three to six months. Then, the people will get to know the new leader. The conservatives will probably do something really unpopular right about the time the new lib leader is getting known and we'll be off to another campaign. Eighteen months tops before the next election I figure.
We were having a brainstorming session at the last Executive Planning Committee meeting and meaning to say 'next time' our candidate accidently said 'next year'. We all laughed because we are all aware that is the truth.
