With all the talk about the liberals being corrupt, I think that most people have forgotten about the basic issue of how effective the Liberals have been at running Canada. I wasn't old enough to think much about what Canada was like when the Liberals weren't in power so I'm not that good of a judge.

Ripcat @ Thu Jan 12, 2006 4:01 pm

No. If they hadn't screwed up with the scandals we wouldn't be having an election in 10 days.

Well don't feel bad, most of us have little experience with anything but liberal govt. We only elect conservative govt here when we get sick of the libs.

Short answer...Yes.

That's why we are having an election.

It depends on what sort of criteria you use. If you're a crazy social conservative, then the Liberals have put on all on the path to eternal damnation.

But, Christians aside, I think the Liberals have done a good job overall. The defecit has been eliminated and the economy has grown steadily in the last decade.

Of course, the government has misspent publicly noticed money, thus losing the trust of the people. But I think that's a symptom of a government becoming too used to being in power. The same thing is happening to the Republicans in hte Us these days and it was the same with the Democrats in the 80's.

Thematic-Device @ Thu Jan 12, 2006 5:44 pm

I'd say they're job overall has been decent... But that their Foreign Policy has reaked of utter imcompetence, how Paul Martin presumes that he can succeed by treating the US political system the same way he would treat a parliamentary system is beyond me. Perhaps if the liberals had cracked a book on the person across the table at negotiations the softwood lumber issue would have been settled a long time ago.

Biggest good things: Paying down the debt and keeping us out of Iraq.

Biggest bad things: Raping the millitary while overextending them. Gun registry.

(those are just my opinion and what comes to mind right away)

I think they've done a better job than any of the variations of the Conservative party would have done.

Tman1 @ Thu Jan 12, 2006 5:56 pm

Personally, I don't think the Liberals have run the country bad and I am impressed by their stance to the Americans. I don't hate Paul Martin, in fact I kind of like him, but unfortunately for him the scandals and corruption has deteriorated his party and his credability. I have said this in some of the multitude of political threads on here but it's time for a change. The corruption crap hasn't affected me nor the gun registry.

We are having an election now because Liberal scandals started before the last election and that killed another Liberal majority.

Without any doubt.

The Liberals having 12 years in power was the best thing that could possibly have ever happened to Canada given the sorry state that the cons left the country in when they were last in power.

Don't you queer boy PET when the conservatives were left with a massive debt.
All the Liberals have done is squandered the Conservative legacy.
