CTV.. a CPC spinner: One of the funniest things I recall hearing was:
$1:
Controversy today as Maritime talk radio host Andrew Krystal rants that CTV Newsnet is looking more and more like FOX News, while targeting CTV's Robert Fife, who he says, looks 'bought and paid for by the Conservative Party of Canada'.
You guys meke me laugh with you're short memory span. It's like all of you came out of some ivy league political science classroom last year.
Zipperfish: No.. I didn't mean the Dion Do-Over video. I meant this one. While Dion goes off glad handing the sheeple, Mansbridge is droning on and on about what a wonderful and caring person Dion is and how what just happened, didn't actually happen. Back in the Chretien days, there was rumor of Chretien giving a senate seat to Mansbridge. This just sounded like he was suditioning for the part again.
Look, I am not a huge fan of Dion. He was probably my last choice for leader of the party, and I thought the way he won the leadership was anything but democractic. However, CTV's recent stunt was completely unfair.
After reviewing the question, someone at CTV must have known that it did't make sense and yet they still decided to air the interview when it was their incompetance that lead to it being botched. And they had promissed not to air it.
This to me is extremly bad journalism, and as citizens, we should not let the incompetance of media outlets interfere with our electoral process.
Delwin, I've always found you quite an articulate and decent sort in this forum.
Dion experienced a lack of sympathy usually reserved for right-of-centre politicians.
Let's face it, most journo's or media types are on the left of the spectrum, the trade attracts them, much like many teachers are left in political outlook. Military and cops are usually right-of-centre. It's just the way it is.
For Dion to actually get a hard time on TV is a sea change in the media, albeit isolated. And the question, regardless of its lack of flow, was legitimate. Dion's trouble in answering it alluded to real communication and interpersonal skill problems.
As for the incompetence of the media, welcome to the right wing.
I disagree that the question was legitimate and would further assert that the question is impossible to answer correctly
$1:
If you were Prime Minister now, what would you have done about the economy and this crisis that Mr. Harper has not done?
The response:
$1:
Stephane Dion: If I would have been the Prime Minister two and a half years ago?
Steve Murphy: If you were the Prime Minister right now.
Stephane Dion: Right now.
Steve Murphy: And had been for the past two years.
Stephane Dion: OK, now, if I am elected next Tuesday, this Tuesday, is what you are suggesting?
Steve Murphy: No I’m saying if you hypothetically were Prime Minister today?
Stephane Dion: Today!
Steve Murphy: What would you have done that Mr. Harper has not done?
Dion asked Steve if he meant that he wanted to know what he would have done if he was elected 2 and a half years ago and Steve said "If you were Prime minister Right now" and then Says" And had been for the last two years." If Steve wanted an answer, he should have simply responded yes to his question. Unfortunately it would appear that Steve did not want an answer, he wanted to confuse Dion with an improperly written question. Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.

I'm not having it Delwin. Dion dropped the ball. Minus a teleprompter he's just a very bad communicator. Harper was crap too, but Dion made him look good.
It realy shouldn't have mattered what the question was anyways. This was core topic and Dion should have been able to recite this to an open mike while he as asleep. He did this during the debates and every speach since.
"If you were Prime minister Right now" and then Says" And had been for the last two years."
There would not have been a pause if Dion did not interrupt him, all Steve was doing was confirming Dion's question of ..

If I would have been the Prime Minister two and a half years ago?
It would have been clear to me at that point aswell. However, I still think the onus is on the interviewer to properly prepare the question.
Dion basically called the guy out on his improper use of English and the Steve Murphy then tried to recreate the question on-the-fly. I am not sure at which point Steve realized that his question didn't make sense, but once he did, he should have rephrased the entire question from the top. He added to the confusion by adding to the question piece by piece. In any case, I certainly wouldn't answer a question that was not clearly phrased if I was in politics, there is just too much scrutiny for that to be a good idea.
Nope. No where near what I'd have expected. It was a pretty uncharactoristic display and that makes me wonder if he was gooned or stoned when he did that.

I think that is actually close to the truth, I think he was completly shagged. He was stressed, running on almost no sleep and probably did not want to talk to the press. He sat down for an interview and just couldnt think straight.
Even still.. Almost any politician know that the'll make a better impression saying nothing than saying something dumb. For example, If Harper said something dumb when that asshole reporter asked what kind of vegetable Harper was, we'd still be hearing about it. That was a deliberate troll for a bad voice clip that Harper defused because he recognised it and was clever enough to sidestep. Dion's question was a pretty clear softball question that Dion should have struck out of the park. .. but he didn't.
Well, the interviewer also had 3 chances to ask the question properly and didn't correct his error, which he should have. The question he wanted an answer to was : if you had been Prime Minister during the economic crisis, how would you have handled it differently ? Not, if you were PM right now. Being the PM right now gives no authority over what has happened in the past several months. A professional journalist should be aware of this very simple concept.
