Hats off to the Liberals. When you cannot control crime, there is only one logical answer; punish the innocent. According to CBC, 94% of illegal guns come across the border from the states.
The Liberals resisted cross border security arrangements with the US, stoked a long standing dispute with Canada Customs workers and failed to address cross-border security technology or procedures, despite a gradual growth in gun smuggling over the last several years.
What they DID do is force legal gun owners to make sure that a vast beurocracy knows where they keep their guns. Of course, if you had crime in mind, no need to register; that was only for the law abiding losers. Now Gun Law part2; get rid of the 6% of illegal gun supply by making law abiding citizens give up their guns. So what if innocent people are losing thier rights; there's an election to win!
No doubt there will be worthy liberal diatribes following this post about how "guns are evil, like, you know, and I don't have one, so why should anyone else?" But this casual approach to removing our liberties is the thin end of the wedge. Next time a boy racer crashes his car, should we ban whatever make of car he was driving? Let's ban Mustangs! They encourage irresponsible driving, cause global warming and upstage Prius owners. But most importantly, they're no use in downtown Toronto, so why should anyone be allowed to own one?
Let's start the campaign now! Ban sports cars! Another big vote winner for the oh-so-tolerant liberals. And if they keep coming up with ideas like this, we can all forget about the 94% of illegal guns that they have no plan for dealing with.

What's more amazing is the media attention. Is everyone that stupid to think this is going to do anything?

I heard someone killed another one with a fork, let's waste another 2,4 billions on bureaucracy to register all the forks in Canada.

Sure they wont spend this money on futility such as health and education :x

FuzzyEarlobes @ Thu Dec 08, 2005 5:27 pm

Canada doesn't need handguns.

Tricks @ Thu Dec 08, 2005 5:35 pm

We dont need.... skateboards. Ban those too, how about ummm garden shovels. Ban those. Its not a sense of need, but want. What about people who are trying to perfect marksmanship with a pistol? Perhaps training for a future career as a cop or military?

Perhaps!!? LOL!

NM, it's going to cost the Federal Gov't 35 billion to buy back 700k handguns.

Good luck passing that Martin.

FuzzyEarlobes @ Thu Dec 08, 2005 5:41 pm

They should just impose a minimum jail sentance for anyone caught with a handgun after a certain date. You surrender them, no buy backs.

Harper proposed that idea in the Commons about a month ago. The Liberals said it was a ludicrous plan.

And today, the bring out the same idea in their promise.

Not such a silly idea when it helps you in an election. :)

FuzzyEarlobes @ Thu Dec 08, 2005 5:47 pm

Harper wanted to ban Handguns? I thought there was another post about the NRA helping the CPC with tactics. I am either getting wrong info from this site or the NRA is wasting their time and money.

Nope

How about tackle the real issue

They should just impose a minimum jail sentence for anyone caught with a handgun involved in a crime.

Leave the legal owners alone we have rights too. Jail the criminals.

FuzzyEarlobes @ Thu Dec 08, 2005 5:50 pm

You rights to a useless handgun will cost the Country a ton of money in extra enforcement costs. My soltion is much more fiscally responsible. "Hey that's a handgun! Come with me son, you are going to jail."

Tricks @ Thu Dec 08, 2005 6:08 pm

So cost canadians who paid money for leagal handguns....Right thats gonna be a real vote raker

FuzzyEarlobes @ Thu Dec 08, 2005 6:13 pm

Handguns are cheaper than lost wages from the "hurmph" military job you lost because you went to Jail.

PluggyRug @ Thu Dec 08, 2005 6:17 pm

All the criminals are roaring laughing. Please Mr Martin is it ok if I don't hand mine in, I need it to blow someone's head off, now hand me that file the serial # can still be seen.

Handguns are already banned, so Martin wants to ban a ban. Heyzeus!, this man will lie to anyone to stay in power.

Methinks the Liberal ship is already scuttled.
