I agree FireEmUp...just watch...if (when) Obama gets in down South and pulls the plug 'over there' Harper will be pulling out too. Why? There are all sorts of reasons but those reasons exist NOW. The real reason will be that he'll do whatever the USA does. Like Mulroney, he will do anything to stay cozy with the USA. I am not suggesting that we have to be antagonistic with the US...not at all...but we can have our own foreign policy. None of the 'goals' in Afghanistan are being met aside from within the small 'controlled' area. Failure of epic proportions and Canadians keep getting killed.

smorgdonkey, the military wants to be in Afghanistan, the military has got a lot new equipment, the dead are a price that hurts but that the military will gladly pay because it is the right thing to do. I won't hit the other points because they are not all as flat out wrong as this one.

The other points are right...and the military isn't there because it is the right thing to do. Never has anyone been successful in thrusting 'freedom' upon a society. The only freedom that lasts is freedom that is won BY the people involved.
Going with 'the right thing to do' is a slippery slope because there are way more 'right things to do' that would have been in line before Afghanistan.
