I hope that Elections Canada made sure that they took the necessary precautions and followed the law when this prisoner voted:

166. (1) No person shall (...) (b) while in a polling station, wear any emblem, flag, banner or other thing that indicates that the person supports or opposes any candidate or political party that is listed on the ballot under the name of a candidate, or the political or other opinions entertained, or supposed to be entertained, by the candidate or party; (...)

If a person was in violation of section 166, then section 497(7) should have been enforced:

Where a returning officer, deputy returning officer, central poll supervisor or person appointed under the Act believes on reasonable grounds that a person has contravened the Act, the officer, supervisor or appointed person may cause to be removed from, in the case of a returning officer, his or her office or, in the case of a deputy returning officer, central poll supervisor or appointed person, the polling station, any material that they believe on reasonable grounds was used in contravention of that paragraph.

"We are all voting Liberal because we wanna keep our vote, we don't wanna lose other rights, like maybe they(the Conservatives) are gonna come in and we're gonna start losing our TV's and other stuff like that,"
-Jeff Powder, inmate serving 6 and a half years for drug trafficking and robbery.

Why should prisoners get cable TV and other luxuries paid for by the taxpayer as necesseties while University students struggle to pay for tuition? We should ensure that university students get help with their tuition before allowing these scumbags any luxuries. At least take away the prisoners' TV's and other luxury items and give them to hardworking University students who deserve them and WANT to contribute to Canadian society.Inmates do not deserve to vote either.TV's and luxury items like such are not a right, but a privillage for those who deserve them. Those TV's should be given to hardworking people who deserve them, such as university students.

why don't you ask the prison guards who have to actually work with these inmates whether they'd like the prisoners to have TV. I think you'll find its a cheap, harmless way to keep the prison population occupied and out of trouble

That can be done by making the prisoners work in chaingangs and having armed gaurds supervise them.

The Libs made the law...is there an expectation from them of being in jail?

To serve time seperated from those who have not been caught. [B-o]

It used to be that if you were in for 2 years or longer, you lost you're right to vote. That was changed by some un-elected,(probably Liberal appointed.. :D )judge that decided their opinions of society are valuable. He definately didn't ask Canadians about it but I'd think almost all would be against it.

Wow..Lily. Stop being so feisty.. some here might actually think you have a side.

ridenrain @ Wed Oct 08, 2008 10:32 pm

That was a reasonable trade off but these judges get some vision from the heavens on what a just society should liik like and off they go on these sweeping changes that no one asked for and no one wants.
I think 2 years is a good measure. Any less and you're more out than in. Any more and you're probably too far gone and no one wants to hear you're opinions anyways.

heh.

they can't take the vote away from the convicted!

the Liberals would lose a signifigant chunk of their electorate.
