Party with most seats doesn't necessarily form government
Ya...sure...The day that will happen will be the day Canada gets rid of the GG....
...then again......

It could happen. It has before. The current government formng an alliance to remain in power. As long as that alliance holds, and as long as they have a majority seats, he can do it.
Theres already a thread about this topic:
Here
And Hwacker has already stated that if the Liberals and NDP form a coalition government then Stephen Harper will sail onto Lake Ontario with his armed Ice-Breakers and lay a siege against Toronto...

and I will be right there with him
Just kidding.....
I've read that parliamentary tradition (whatever that's worth) usually means the current government is given the first chance to form a government in a minority situation.
I don't think it will make a difference this time because the Libs will lose seats in Quebec and I don't see them regaining them anywhere else.

Times have changed...as a Canadian, I wouldn't accept that. As a Quebecer, I still wouldn't accept that.
That's playing with democracy.

If the cons get like 120 seats, the libs 95 seats, and the NDP 35 seats.....
Then a lib/ndp coalition would have more seats than cons and would be able to form the gov't.....
We probably won't know what will happen until Paul Martin talks it over with the Governor General....maybe tomorrow or thereafter...
Think about it....if the libs and ndp together have more seats then they can defeat anything that the cons try to pass.....that is not a stable gov't...
Democracy says the most votes wins.....so the government is formed by the group of MPs who has the most seats......whether it be one party, two parties grouped together, or one new party made of two old parties......

There should be a law that says that, if the coalition wasn't formed before the elections were called, then it can't be used to stay in power.

But what is the point of having a government if that government can be voted down by the two other parties anytime....If there is a party-combination of elected MPs that cannot be defeated by the other parties, then they can form a stable gov't
Anything like that happening will be then end of Canada as we know it.
