Tories Can Pretty Much Do What They Want For A Year or Two

IceOwl even for you that was a stupid comment! How is a FREE vote (vote your conscience, not the party line) an abuse of democracy? It seems to be possibly the MOST democratic way to put the issue to rest, and I wouldn't worry too much about it anyway because it will still be okay after the vote. Then we can move onto more important issues, like finding out EXACTLY how much money was siphoned off by Paulie and company!

Would it be an abuse of democracy to have a free vote concerning slave rights or womens rights? Same thing.

No, the funny thing is how the Con spin doctors and apologists are making a weak minority government sound like a huge victory. 1993 was a huge victory for the Libs, just like 1984 was for the PCs. This was closer to a flip of a coin...
This time around, the Cons only managed about 20 seats more than the Libs, even though leading in the polls for almost the whole campaign and using their own accountability 'attack ads'. Even with a scandal that had probably half of (maybe even 2/3) Canadians outraged, they still could barely manage a weak minority of about 1/3 the seats.
The only reason we won't be enjoying American-style health care and sending troops to fight Dubya wars next year is because 55+% of Canadians said no thanks to Harper and his right wing agenda. Had they gotten a majority (shudder), this next parliament would be very different from the one that's going to unfold now.
For a party two years in the making, a leader not well known in Canada, and despite the Liberals being in power for the last 12 years and the 70 of the last 100, it is a good victory for the CPC. They ran a great campaign, got their message out, all being debt free.
So, if the Liberals are in debt to the tune of 20 million, I guess that money they stole from Adscam didn't help much.
Did you pay attention to the campaign at all?
The CPC wasn't leading in the polls until the start of January, a month into the campaign.
And you can thank Martin for the huge increase in private clinics and the influx of private insurance companies advertising on TV. Funny how they just snunk all that private care in under the radar, eh?

No Derby it wouldn't be abuse of democracy but it would be political suicide for anyone to push it forward! The bottom line is that SSM as it stands will still be legal after the vote, but then we can say that it was done without any party pushing any political agenda and get onto more important issues.
The fact is that approx. 50% of the Canadian public oppose it for whatever reason, and approx. 50% of the public support it for whatever reason (I'm not going to argue peoples reasons, I'm sure that they can justify it in their own minds) but I do think it will continue to be legal, so it's not really that big a deal!

Then why have the vote? As for those who oppose it, it isn't any different then things like de-segregation which was forced upon the people n the south right? It was the right (and extremely difficult) thing to do and it went against massive public opposition yet it was done.
I could care less if every Canadian opposes it. Its the right thing to do.

Two years in the making? HELLO McFLY!
This 'new' party is essentially the Reform party, except finally on a national stage, after swallowing the handful of PCs left outside Alberta.

Who cares what you think, it's not you that said he would have a free vote.
There will be a free vote; I know it may shock the shit out of you to find a politician that actually does what he says.
I'm sorry, but weren't there a whole bunch of polls calling for a tory majority? Just clouds in their coffee, I guess.
This government lasts only as long as Harper can keep the wing-nut bull-buggering anti-social plaid-brownshirt-cowboys gagged. The moment they start talking out their stetsons it'll be back to the wilderness. Face it, in order to survive the Harperites must govern from the centre. They have a grace period of about a year, then it's open season on the republican-lite party.

You still don't get it. The Liberals are done for at least 4 years after all the shit that will come out about them they will never be able to recover in 1 year.
You think banks are going to loan them money when they are already +40 million in the hole.
Talk about a dreamer.
