What would you do if your riding's candidate is a douche? He's a really, really weird guy - some think he's crazy, others think he's just slow. We're in a small city so everyone knows him, and he's living with a real wacko lady who's kids are complete morons. She went on a verbal rampage at the high school last year trying to convince the teachers to not fail her daughter in grade 8 because she's "bigger than all of the other kids". Meanwhile, the candidate rides around town on an electric scooter ALWAYS wearing the same smelly suit, waving like an idiot.

What the hell do you do? Just vote for the federal candidate?

If I were you I'd punch myself in the face repeatedly.

faile @ Thu Oct 09, 2008 9:50 am

Your riding only has one candidate?

Smellville @ Thu Oct 09, 2008 9:55 am

No, the candidate with the party I'd like to support.

Zipperfish, an idiotic post AND a Canuck fan? You're bold.

SprCForr @ Thu Oct 09, 2008 10:05 am

1. Join the party and get involved in the riding association. Change the candidate.

2. Vote for someone else.

3. Don't vote.

I thought my post was quite inspired actually. It certainly had the virtue of brevity and a certain panache, if you will. Yes, all in all, I'd have to say it was an excellent post. As the unwitting dupe of my clever jest, I can understand why you may have a harder time appreciating its sublime, understated brilliance, however rest assured that everyone else had a good laugh at your expense.

Go Canucks!

But necessary for defending freedom. (Which is not to advocate any current military activity)

Most of the protestors I've been exposed to lately have been essentially protesting the government not spending enough money on them. It made me a bit cynical.

But apologies for the thread derail ;)

You know you can write in your candidate. That's as effective as spoiling the ballot but it more specific. On a side note:

GO CANUCKS!!!! :rock:

Sarcasm = ON.

Do like all other Canadians do.
Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain.

But never ever do anything about it.
Don't go bitch at them, write letters, talk to the other parties, etc. Everybody knows that you can't do anything about politics ever and that saying that we deserve the politicians we get was made up by 18 year old political science majors who get to vote for the first time and have no clue what the real world is like.

Well, my sig is somewhat facetious. I went to an anti-war protest at a time when Canada was debating whether or not join in with Bush and Blair in Iraq. What I found was a bunch of disparate groups each promoting their own cause, and the Iraq issue just a convenient excuse ton push their own agendas--so I agree with you on that count. On the other hand protests, like wars, can lead to social goods, like for example, ending the Holocaust (in the case of war) or civil rights for blacks and women (in the case of protests).

Apologies also for derailing!

Actually writing in your candidate is exactly the same as spoiling the ballot. The fact that you wrote in another name isn't recorded, and therefore serves no purpose.

$1:
Rejection of ballots

279. (1) The deputy returning officer shall, in counting the ballots, reject a ballot if

* (a) it has not been supplied for the election;

* (b) it is not marked;

* (c) it is marked with a name other than the name of a candidate;

* (d) it is marked for more than one candidate; or

* (e) there is any writing or mark on it by which the elector could be identified.

It depends what you want to base your vote on, Smellville. Several polls have shown that most Canadians put more weight on a party or leader than they do on the local candidate, so if you decide to vote for those reasons you certainly won't be alone.

If you want to vote for the candidate though, then I'd suggest voting for somebody else.

After the election, because it's too late to do anything about it this time, get involved with the riding association and try to get them to run somebody more to your liking.

And some advice my friend Jim, who moved back to England to retire, "Fuck 'em mate. Tetley's comes in real pints here." Jim's not very political, but he's got a point.

Contact the Party you'd like to support and explain what a douche their candidate is. I'm sure they'd love to know.
