What would happen if the left unites?

I would like to discuss the merits of some that claim that a united left would automatically guarantee a victory.

This is illogical because they assume that if the NDP and the Libs united, every single one of their voters would vote for the new party.

I have many friends that vote Liberal that have a lot more in common with the Conservatives than they do with the NDP. In fact many of them switch votes between the CPC and Liberals.

I believe that if the left did unite, the CPC support would go from the 38% in this election to at least 45% which means that we would end up with a two party system (excluding the Bloc) like in the US. I'm not sure I would be opposed to this.

What do you think?

If the left unites......they will still fall short.

I completely agree with you but somehow they like to look at ridings, add the Lib support to the NDP support and automatically claim victory if it adds up to more votes than the Conservative candidate.

The problem is the lefties are even more divided that the right was.
