Excellent links McRobert. By the way, the Quebec police admitted that the thugs at the protest were theirs. Harper's ofice refused to comment.
I do not agree with your points on our economics, unless I read them wrong. Are you saying our economy is directly linked to the American economy? If so i would have to disagree, we are a resource based economy (I do not like that we are, but we are). Anyways we rape the land and sell it, we are not really connected to the states, we can easily sell our resources somewhere else if we need to. Notice how the Canadian dollar goes up and down with the price of commodities? The fact that the American economy is lowering really can only provide us with an example of what not to do, unfortunately we are following their lead and digging ourselves into a bigger hole. What we should actually be doing is trying to move away from a resource based economy and not so much into a manufacturing, but more of an information and greener economy. We should try to have a sustainable economy, unlike the one we have now. Anyways, I just disagree if you think our economy is going to lower with the states, because our resource economy can sells its resources anywhere.
We should have a less resource based economy, Libralesso, but the reality that we don't. In fact we've been moving backwards, becoming more dependent on resources, for the last several years. We are also more tied to the US economy now than we used to be.
As for selling our resources elsewhere, we definitely should be. Only a fool would put so many eggs in one basket. The reality is that we haven't been though. We have trade deficits with most of our trading partners, not trade surpluses. It's been an incredibly long-term mismanagement of our economic development, going back to Mulroney.
Yes I know, it is also because European countries do not like to buy more than they sell. They like to be very self-sufficient. but anyways with growing markets in China and India and Brazil, we could easily begin to trade with other countries of the world if need be. I also agree that we have been moving backwards, becoming more and more dependent on natural resources, and I don't like it. It is also one of the major reasons Aboriginal peoples have it so bad in this country because our history is a history of displacement and rape. They had a sustainable economy. while we had an unsustainable one built on raping the land, and of course raping the land will win in the short term. Our whole history has from then been built on displacing Aboriginal peoples and taking the natural resources. Another problem with a resources based economy. But again there are other markets for our resources, not Europe but the upcoming countries like I stated earlier. Brazil also likes to not take in more than they give out either though so they would be a hard trading partner, but China and India are eating up resources right now. But ultimately we should be moving out of our resource based economy as quickly as possible, something I don't think Harper is to fond of doing. But it needs to be done, because we can not keep this economy running, it is completely unsustainable. But the point I was making earlier is that if the States buys less we can find a bigger trading partner with other countries, I already named two that are using resources quite rapidly. I am sure there would be moer countries willing to trade if Canada looked for them.
Well, I'm thinking of starting a thread:
"Libs must be a bit fick two pick dion fur leeder."
It has content and a message. Plus it's pretty accurate! What do you anti-Con apologists think? Is it a go?
It looks like Eyebrock doesn't want us talking about this, Libralesso. It must be sad to be him.
China, India, and Brazil...as well other emerging nations...are quite protectionist as well though, Libralesso. Many of the industries they are protecting to encourage development are the same ones we would trade in. The result is that we will have trade deficits with them for some time to come.
The answer to that is that is to begin fair trade policies requiring human and worker rights as well as the environment to play a role. It would encourage them to look after things on their domestic front and make it more equitable for us to trade with them. Instead we sign free trade agreements with countries that murder unionists and destroy the environment, then wonder why we can't compete.
It would seem to me that the world functions today as a series of serpantine belts connected to an engine (the US economy functioning largely as the engine) We all base our money and it worth against the greenback etc.
The engine is driving multiple economies on different levels.. So therefore if the engine is running and one of the belts snap only certain pulleys will grind to a hault. ie. Japan failed but the world economy did not collapse, instead the system in a sense sped up but that speed was simply hyper inflation to offset their woes.
The US buys most of our resources and produce. If they do not have the money to purchase our goods and resources our country suffers with them. We do not have a merchant marine system in place which is strong enough to offset a collapse of the American economy, much of our money is invested in them as well. So if they do indeed collapse they bring down the system essentially and we, being closest and most dependent on their purchasing power come down with them.
Research Canada during the great depression. The situation then is different but similar to what we are involved in now.

Lol you again, OK look at any of the Aboriginal nations of this Canada when Europeans arrived here. Look at Leroy Little Bear's "Jagged Worldviews Colliding" For some perspectives of what Aboriginal culture and economics were like. Also look at:
Anything by J.R. Miller The Aboriginal studies writer. Especially "Skyscrapers Hid the Heavens: A history of Idian-White Relations in Canada"
Olive Patricia Dickason "Walking a Tightrope: Aboriginal People and Their Representations.
Or take some Aboriginal studies courses. Or look at the history of Canada. The way we kicked Aboriginal peoples off their lands and use them to develop industries and mining areas. The Mississauga and Seneca are a good example of this.
Now look at our economy, look at where the wealth comes from; natural resources. look at how we have used the land that Aboriginal people's have lived on, and how we have destroyed forests, lakes, plains, whatever we use.
again to prove that read those books, look at the different Aboriginal Nations in Canada and look at their history. Look at Toronto itself, it all used to be land belonging to Aboriginal peoples and we have come here and built over everything, damned up the rivers, and dehumanized everything.
Also to prove the point look at the lack of recognition for Aboriginal peoples help in building this country. Even the park names are named after the Europeans who first saw them, even though Aboriginals saw them for thousands of years before that. But we put the European name up signaling that Europeans were the first people to "discover" it. The fact that their culture and language has been systemically targeted in this country, and almost destroyed if it weren't for the efforts of Aboriginal peoples to try and save it.
The very policies we enacted, the Indian act is a good example, the 1969 white paper is another one. The very fact that we tried to tell them what is best for them for hundreds of years. Also the fact that one of our policies was to isolate them and hope that they disappear.
Now just for a little bit more historical facts. The fact that we moved them to reserves with the shittiest land in Canada so we could take their land. Also the fact that we still ignore treaty rights.
Anyone who says we did not treat Aboriginals badly is clearly blind to our history.
