Contrary to what is assumed, native 'culture' is not contradictory to western civilization (no natives will claim to want to return to the days when they lived hand to mouth) The primary commonality of most indiginous culture is simply that of sharing resources. This is strongly evident in canadian culture as well, unfortunately it is not the 'dominant' ideology and it is decreasing as time goes by. <br /> This is why I disagree with the idea of a 'strong federal government' quite simply because it is this federal government which REFUSES to 'treat them as well as we can'. Our government governs virtually every aspect of our lives, if some people are starving THERE IS A REASON. In fact, in canada there are two reasons. First, because of the co-operative aspects of tribal society they cannot be allowed to function affluently. Simply because if other canadians saw that their society was flourishing, they would act to change their own. Second, access to Canada's land must be available to corporations and companies, so land use treaties must be dragged out until native bands adopt the same hierarchical structures and canadian society. If we were a true democracy nobody would tolerate nuclear waste, industrial pollution, inefficient water systems, etc. A strong federal government simply means 'same old, same old'. If you think there is much difference between native treatment now and in the past, you haven't done any research.
