Are Addictions a Real Disease
Yogi @ Sun Jan 11, 2009 9:58 pm
I am going to draw a parallel that even my 12 year old grandson could follow and understand.
Re: Is Beach Volleyball an Olympic Sport
As the question is asked, there is only ONE correct answer. And that is 'YES'! Why can there only be ONE correct answer? Because The International Olympic Committee ( **THE governing body which makes such decisions) says Beach Volleyball is an Olympic Sport. I may not agree with their decision, but no amount of denying on my part is going to change the fact that Beach Volleyball is an Olympic sport.
In the same vein, asking the question; Are addictions a Real Disease also can only be answered with 'yes'.
In neither question was it asked " In you're opinionis....
Had either question asked for opinions then there could be several different answers, all of which would be correct!
One of the most basic tenets of law in a court room is "Don't ever ask a question to which you don't already have the answer"!

I thought this was a discussion regarding whether addiction was a disease, not whether some medical association labels it a disease. Labels are just labels, I think we are discussing the meat and potatoes of the issue.
Brenda @ Sun Jan 11, 2009 10:02 pm
But Ruez... because they label it a disease, it IS!
Brenda @ Sun Jan 11, 2009 10:04 pm
Euhmm, Yogi...
It is a poll.. What is that? NOT asking for opinions?

Ya that's exactly what he's saying. However I looked and the title of the thread says "is addiction a real disease". Let's get beyond what people are labeling it and right to the matter. Is it a
real disease?

Whaddayathink, am I allowed to have an opinion on it?

Sure, that's all that I have as well considering I'm not a doctor nor a researcher. But on CKA everyone is allowed their opinion.

I think it's not a disease. The effects of addiction can cause diseases, but that is about it...

Ok. Now we are back to the basics. Where will you look to find the information to answer the question? You do require information from *informed sources regardless of the question( *they are the ones who have already done the research). Will you ask an auto mechanic? Perhaps you can find an article in Readers Digest. Or would you be inclined to ask someone who has done ,oops, there's that word again 'research'?
In order to give credibility to any answer of any question you require 'someones credible knowledge' to back your answer. You may not like the answer but facts are facts. And facts are arrived at only through research/experience. Then again, if one is going to ask a question in such a way as be guaranteed an answer to their liking, then is it really a question?
To the question of the poll; yes. every poll asks a question. This one was pretty straight forward. Putting my own experiences aside, I 'asked' that exact question of many different medical sites and only passed on their answers, all of which I happen to agree with. Surprise, surprise! I trust in the research done by both scientists and M.D.'s with varying degrees.
You want information about an auto, you ask a mechanic, the more experience he has, the more detailed his answer, the greater the likelyhood of getting your question answered. Got a question about construction, ask a carpenter, got a question about electical, do you ask an electrician or do you ask your family doctor? And so it stands to reason that if you want an answer to a medical question that you would talk to those in the medical field. In the end though, if you don't think you are going to like the answer, it is best that you do not ask the question!
***EDIT***
Note in Lily's quote of Eisen; to paraprhase; Eisen states ' articles written by
non-medical persons have
no credibility,

In my opinion addictions are not diseases. You can't 'choose' to have not have cancer, but I can sure choose not to smoke.
I do agree there are people with personalities that are more prone to addiction and addictive behaviour. But I sorry, don't by the 'disease' part.
In my opinion they are.
Looks like we have us a stalemate.
true, but if you look at the poll, it appears that the sides other than yes have the advantage.
So I would argue that your said opinion is not among the majority.

See how that works?
We can form a coalition and overrule the yes people?

good one
Addiction in its many shapes or forms may or may not technically be a disease. It is however ruining lives and families everyday and I hope the best for anyone who suffers with addiction or has a loved one that does!
