Had the same problem a few years ago. Turns out it was a non malignant tumour on my parotid gland. The swelling affected the facial nerves branches that travel below and behind the ear.
Finally had surgery to remove the gland. Now have a slight loss of feeling on the ear lobe.

I wish you well and hope it isn't the above.

I've never been very sick and if the worse I ever get boils down to an inflamed nerve... I won't complain too much.

Be thankful for small blessings, I guess. The point of these things may be to teach us what's really important. Hope it levels off and fades quickly. [B-o]

Dad had "the most severe case of Belles Palsy that I have ever seen/teated" according to his neurologist. The left side of his face also. In your case Ray, it sounds like it will get worse before it starts to get better. But I am thinking of 'worst case scenario'. Most B.P. patients recover to a great extent or completeley. If memory serves me correctly, about a year or so.Eye drops are necessary of course and an eye patch may be also. Dad used to always wear eye patch at bed time.
Dad just regarded it as a 'real inconvenience' but was able to go about his job and daily affairs. And treatment back in the 60's sure wasn't what was available today. Eye drops and 292's! The other aspect of course bothered him somewhat as he had no control over the left side of his mouth so eating/drinking wasn't something he looked forward to. The skin will sag down as you lose muscle support, but remember that in most cases, that is temporary also.

Here's to a complete recovery, and don't let it get you down! [B-o] [B-o] [B-o]

Damn Yogi, 292's 8O

I haven't heard that term since the 50's when my aunt was mixing them with her valium and vodka. :D

She was a great lady if somewhat a little laid back. [B-o]

Anybody here, or anybody you know, have any "experience" with this?

Note: This is what Jean Chretien has.

So, you're saying you won't do any better than be Prime Minister of Canada ?

I understand. :(

Don't forget to poke the neurologist back, tell her it's your
understanding of equal rights and all that. ;)

Was it a he or a she?......

In my case, no to either, closest I ever got was an offer of a back massage by a gay male nurse when I was a teen.......refused...

A she, seems this condition has no effect on my orientation... at least not yet.

But I did once get a massage from a rather tall gay male Dutch masseuse. 8O

Sorry to hear Raydan. A fellow at work had a spell of it, but I don't think he even took much time off , if any. AFAIK, it's usually a short-term condition requiring minimal treatment and the long-term effects are minimal if they exist at all.

raydan @ Sat Jan 19, 2013 11:00 am

1 pill to settle my stomach, I eat and then I take 12 cortisone pills... all at once. 8O

Keep us posted on this, Ray. Good luck! [B-o]

I had this in 2006.....thought I was about to have a stroke. I woke up on christmas morning with it. Started off as an ear ache a couple of days before. It lasted 6 weeks. Doc gave me pregnisone which apparently speeds up the recovery process. I had to take a couple of weeks off work because of it. It was a pain to eat and shower cause you have no control over whatever side of your face it afflicts. Good luck with your recovery.

Raydan,
I spoke to Lisa about this on Friday night and she says that the cause of it, in her experience, is typically a viral infection in the nerve group that branches out from around the ear to the jaw and mandible. In fewer cases it can be linked to the jaw dislocating while you're asleep and pinching the nerve and causing damage to it. If you are able to relax and dislocate your jaw (as some people can) then her recommendation is to ask your dentist or doctor for a referral to a specialist who can set you up with a mouthpiece or other retainer to prevent this from recurring.

In the case of the viral infection she says most of her patients are 'just fine' after 12-24 months.

Also, you now have a rural California church congregation praying for your recovery.

Peter
