I work at a restaurant. With staff meals supplementing my diet I usually just eat a bowl of rice at home on my days of or when I get hungry.

I recently went out and actually bought groceries (first time in months) and have done more traditional cooking at home and have made a discovery.

Bread isn't filling.

But the comparative work/nutritional values between wheat, rice and corn are what has shaped the world.

Rich hearty bread is what has brought European Style Civilization around the world and conquered the globe.

So why am I hungry? Am I eating a snacking bread without substance? How long have we been living like this?

Grocery store bread is shit. And white grocery store bread is ever shittier. I suggest a good Portugese or German bakery for some nice, tasty substantial bread that will fill you up AND tatse good too. There's a great 12 grain bread out there that's got some heft to it as well.

If I let my glucose meter decide for me. I've found that rice is a bit better than most 12 grain breads.

Canadian bread truly sucks. Dutch bread is way more filling (sorry, the German sour bread just doesn't do it for me ) and tastier, and it's one of the things I miss most.

What is "Canadian" bread? You can go to a bakery and get a wide variety of great breads.

Canadian bread is pretty much commercial bread. Its mostly flour, fluffy, and loaded to the ying yang with glutton.

yeah, if there were any :D
I'm sorry, I should say "supermarket" bread.

BUT, there is a HUGE difference between Dutch grocery store bread and Canadian grocery store bread.
I have not found one that I really find fulfilling. And it's awfully expensive.

Ok, that I understand and I agree with you. I bought a bread maker because I was tired of supermarket bread, problem is I'm to lazy to turn it on.

Find a local farmer's market. There's always tons of wonderful, fresh bread. [drool]

Tons of variety, it's definitely more filling and quite often the bakers will take special orders.

We buy lots of our bread there and it's fabulous.

Oatbread, soda bread, and pumpernickle.... [drool]

White bread makes me feel like poo....

I think what Brenda is talking is about generic Canadian bread, which she's right it sucks donkey balls.

The real good shit for half the price you can only find at a bakery.

Nothing like a hot chicken sandwich on fresh dark rye bread.

Personally for me, if I'm looking for something filling and/or will give my meal some staying power, I haul out some mushrooms. They not only have the quality of making you feel full and for longer, they actually take more calories to digest than they contain.
That and they are just so yummy, nom nom nom.
