lily lily:
My niece plays on a women's hockey team... she's the youngest by a fair bit. Her coach and the captain are a married couple with 2 young kids, a 3 year old boy and a 15 month old girl. The kids are regular rink rats... the little boy has recently learned the national anthem and will sing it at some of their games.

Recently, the parents noticed a large bruise on her right leg. They were concerned enough that they took her to see a doctor, who sent her to specialists where she was diagnosed with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a fast growing, highly malignant tumour.

Yesterday she underwent a 7-hour surgery (much less than the expected 9-12 hours) where her leg was amputated above her knee. The cool part is the doctors took her ankle, turned it around, and created a knee for her which will make it a lot easier for her later to use a prosthetic leg. Tomorrow she'll be put in a full body cast (from the armpit down) for 6 weeks. After that's removed, she'll undergo 30 weeks of chemo. (remember, the little tyke is only 15 months)

She's in good spirits - her mom drew a happy face on her cast and she awoke to her brother's rendidtion of O Canada - but her form of cancer is rare and has an extremely low survival rate.

The family has lots of support from family and friends as well as the hockey world, but prayers are always welcomed.

What a heartbreaker.

I don't pray, but I think about the little one, and cross everything for her. Will that do too? This is so sad...

I hope she will recover...

2Cdo @ Sat Sep 08, 2007 7:33 am

Especially hard when it comes to kids. My thoughts and prayers for a full and speedy recovery.

Ripcat @ Sat Sep 08, 2007 7:42 am

I can't imagine how her parents feel through all this. My wife and I were freaking out over our son being sick and feverish during a bad ear infection.

The Ripcats send many hugs and hope for a full recovery.

Lily this is the second time I've read your post (you know where else I have read it) and it's just like reading it all over again. :(

Bless her little soul.

We just went through a bit of a rough time with our oldest (19) who was in danger of losing his liver. He recovered and won't lose his liver, but it looks like he'll never be allowed to drink alcohol.

I didn't know this, and maybe someone can clarify it, but when you drink alcohol and take Tylenol for whatever reason it can become toxic and poison you. It seems to really affect the liver and he might have some permanent damage. Hell of a way to learn a lesson.

Like I said he is doing okay for now but he has to get weekly bloodwork done and in 90 days he has another series of tests to see if his liver function returns to normal.

How's the little girl doing?

I only just read this thread today. I find more solace in meditation than prayer. (in many ways it's one and the same) I will try to send some positive energy that way.
