I'm really starting to hate the total lack of competiton that this tournament contains these days. One superpowered team and another dozen or so mere spacefillers? What's so patriotically entertaining about something so continuously lopsided? Am I a mutant for thinking that running up the score like that on a clearly hapless opponent is kinda, errr, low-class? The part where the players act like they're having an orgasm after each goal they score, epscially when the tally is already something ridiculous like 8-0 or worse, is kind of non-sporting IMHO.

I agree with you on the sportsmanship angle. That problem could be alleviated with a tournament scoring system that doesn't reward total goals, goal differential, etc, to impact Pool standings. But for those weaker teams, birth in the tournament is a tremendous boon to their hockey programs. I don't begrudge their presence in the tournament. I see it like I see Canada in international soccer. It's good to see the national program competing, even though they really offer no competition to the elite nations.

When I was in grade 11, my highschool team made it to OFSSA (Ontario provincial championship for you non-Ontarians). We got killed. But we made it to OFSAA. That was one of the best experiences of my life.

The matter of tournament officiating in the WJC is another issue. I know, they'll never allow it so that all games are officiated by Canadian officials, but seriously. If they want the tournament to not be a joke, they need to just accept that officials can be unbiased and let the guys that know how to call a game be doing so. These clowns from Sweden and Slovakia and where-ever-the-hell wouldn't pass an OMHA supervisor's evaluation of them in a local-league Pee Wee game. It's time that all tournament games be assigned to Canadian officials only.

Don't watch it then. Focus on Canadian soccer and summer Olympics if you don't want Canada winning anything. Problem solved. Then again, you seem to not have watched previous World Junior hockey...where Canada lost aplenty. Pity.

Essentially I agree with you but it's up to the world to get better, not us getting worse. Problem with that is that if countries become better, American baseball just wouldn't be like it was.....

Like Lemmy said, we need something other than goal differential to decide standings. I don't like to see 16-0 games either but that is the reality of the tournament.

All that aside, I am looking forward to our sixth championship in a row!

Also, I have been on both sides of lopsided games in my younger day and it doesn't do either team well. The losing team might decide to start gooning it up and the winning team might develop some sloppy habits.

Neither of those possible scenarios will do Team Canada well. 8O
