Don Cherry
It had to do with fighting in the NHL, how the fans cheer for it as well as the players/ coaches.
"It's always been a part of the game. The fans love fighting. The players don't mind. The coaches like the fights. What's the big deal?" (Cherry on fighting in hockey)

I agree. The only people who don't like fighting are the people who don't watch it anyways.
Don gets into trouble when he starts making political comments or bitching about the swedes. Has he ever interviewed sundin or alfredson or any swede for that matter?
or lumps players from Quebec in with them
Love'em; Hate'em
I imagine the only issue against fighting in the NHL is the message it sends to kids... kind of confusing for a kid to hear how much fighting is a part of the game, and then get told not to fight.
I like Don Cherry though, always good for a laugh.

It is a mixed message. Don has always stated that the fighting should be for the midget & above kids. Of course there is always the honourable code that is omnipresent with regrad to hockey fighting that he stresses incessantly.
You hear kid's at games chanting, "fight, fight, fight". If parents don't like their kids to watch fighting, then don't bring them.

Exactly, too often people forget that whole "code of honour" thing. It's not just in hockey but in schools. A fight isn't a fight anymore. Someone loses, then gets his friends for some revenge which only escalates. Schools frowning on fighting is causing the honour system to go out the window. If fights were organized then there wouldn't be a problem. But can you imagine the parental outcry? Seems to me that it would be better than little Johnny getting his ass handed to him then coming back to school and shooting up the place.
