Introducing the Seattle Kraken

$1:
The newest NHL franchise will be called the Seattle Kraken, the team announced Thursday.

Hockey fans learned the name and got a first look at the team's logo during a news conference from the Washington city.

The league's 32nd franchise drew inspiration from its location on the Pacific Ocean in choosing the mythological creature featured in Scandinavian folklore.

$1:
The new design uses two shades of blue to represent the region's maritime history, Dettmer said, and the "fierce" eye is meant to represent the tenacity of the team slated to hit the ice in time for the 2021-22 NHL season.

I like the name and the logo!

I'm glad Seattle finally has a team. It should have happened years ago.

OK... I'll say it...

Have they released the Krakens?

They gotta invite Liam Neeson to open the ceremonies for their first home game. 8)

I have to disagree on this one. Seattle should have never gotten a team, much less before Quebec City regaining a franchise. Bettman has already proven time and again that his idea of expansion usually fail, hard.

A lot of people would have much preferred to see the Nordiques return and renew the Quebec/Montreal rivalry. It was bad enough that Winnipeg had to wait so long to get the Jets back, what with that horrible failure in Atlanta (for the SECOND time!).

Sorry, but Seattle doesn't make sense.

It makes a lot more sense for Seattle to have a team than any of the Sunbelt teams like Atlanta or Tampa.

My only problem is that there is going to be another team with obnoxious fans from Seattle. If they’re anything like the Seattle Sounders fans they’ll be completely insufferable.

Could end up like Mariners games where they play the Jays (or in this case, probably Canucks) and there would be more fans there for the opposing team.

Wil the teams fans be known as Krakheads?

Will the stadium be known as the krakhouse?

There’s very little US TV money to be made from Canadian teams. Don’t expect any new Canadian teams anytime soon. Even the re-established Jets were only allowed begrudgingly. The leagu would move every Canadian team south of the border if it could.

If people think this is about hockey fans, rivalries and regional disparity I've got some bad news for them. Bettman and his "legacy" have been the worst things that have happened to the NHL. He's turned a once proud league with formerly high standards for admission into a watered down version with players who are nothing more than roster fillers and whose talents are so lacking that relatively speaking 50 years ago they would have at best been playing in house leagues.

Sadly he'll keep putting expansion teams in places where they don't belong just to keep the poorer team owners happy with revenue he generates from the exorbitant fees the league charges for a franchise. All the while he holds the profitable (see original six and a few other) teams hostage by playing the poorer owners of teams in cities where hockey doesn't belong off against the minority of richer team owners.

Sorry but the NHL isn't what it used to be even 30 years ago and handing out franchises is nothing more than a ponzi scheme designed to keep his power intact and his investors thinking he's there for them.

Bettman can suck a big bag of dicks. He is the fucking worst thing to happen to Hockey. The man is literally worse than Harold Ballard.

BartSimpson @ Mon Jul 27, 2020 10:20 am

Another major league team for me to ignore.

I'd love to see the Nordiques come back but I gave up on that notion years ago. As long as Butthead is in charge it'll never happen.

I agree with the sentiments that the league is too big already and the expansion should stop. It would make a hell of a lot more sense to move a team that has low attendance/revenue to a new market, just like they should have done with Vegas but unfortunately the almighty dollar rules when it comes to pro sports.

My only reason to be glad abut Seattle is so the Canucks can enjoy a rivalry with a nearby team.

It seems I've always known people who have driven down to Seattle for baseball (Jays fans I think mostly), football and soccer but I don't recall hearing any of them complain about Seattle fans or having any issues.
