How many Habs fans do we have here?

And how many Leafs fans?

I just proved my point ;-)

Aye, Aye now ! :D

I am a Habs fans.

But I will not go to the extent of HabsFanMan or whatever.

Ok, yes, there might be some Habs fans throughout Canada, but not that many. Same thing with the Leafs.

Of course, there are plenty around the Montreal area, after all, there is nothing else :D Well, ok, The Alouettes but let's not talk about that

Anyways, it's always good to show your pride, fans of any hockey team. But let's not get all bent out of shape about it. I will give the Habs one thing, they have won more Stanley Cups than anyone else. But, Since Patrick has left the Forum, nothing has happened either, last time '93.

Tman1 Tman1:
Then again, I tend to cheer for any Canadian team be they the Habs or Leafs who make it to the playoffs.

I agree with that. Let's just say that in the past few years, we had Canadians teams in the finals. I have been pulling for all these Canadian teams at the Stanley Cup finals.

After all, that's what it's all about :D

Tman1 @ Thu Nov 22, 2007 12:48 am

Even the damned western Oilers, Flames, and Canucks who probably Quebecers don't even know about?

Trust me dude, I have been pulling for every single CANADIAN team that made it to the Stanley Cup finals in the past few years. :D

The way I look at it, it's all good to be a partisan to any team. But when it comes to the Finals, eventhough your team did not make it, you make the best of it.

Like the Oilers, Flames, and Sens in the past few years, I was pulling for all of them.

THat is your source? Facebook? You based your argument on Facebook members?

I'm not basing my argument on facebook, I'm trying to find the real numbers! I'm hoping that someone can provide them. facebook is by no means a reliable indicator, but you have to ask yourself, with over a million members in Toronto alone, why would there be more Habs fans than leaf fans? Why would people there buck the trend? It just so happens that it's the only source I've been able to find that provides an actual number comparison, unreliable as it surely is. I've googled every combination I can think of and come up empty-handed.

Euhhmmm, actually, you are making the claim here:

Habfanman Habfanman:
It's true! I've never seen any actual numbers to back up the claim,

and when you claim something to be true, YOU provide the info that goes with it. If you can't, you shouldn't have made it "truth", but a question. Or am I nitpicking now? ;-)

I'm merely stating that it's true, I haven't been able to find any information! I will now provide all of the information that I have not been able to find:

There! That is truly, much of the information that I have not been able to find. There is probably more, but since I don't know how much I have yet to find, I don't know how much blank space to leave!

Fabulous. So, in a roundabout way, you're no different than the fanatics from Leaf Nation. You've got nothing to support your contention that the Habs are the most popular team, so I guess we can expect you to empathize with those in Leaf Nation that make similar declarations.

Habfanman Habfanman:

While, "Please", "C'mon", and "Pffft" may be considered great counter-arguments over at Leaf Nation, I was hoping for more concrete proof. While there are heaps of leaf fans in the stands at Buffalo and Detroit games, (they are border towns after all and only a 2-3 drive from Toronto), there are also hordes of Habs fans at their games. It's the same in other Canadian cities, Vancouver and Ottawa in particular.

And that’s your concrete proof? “There are also hordes of Habs fans”? I’m willing to bet there are more Leaf fans at a Sens game than Habs fans. Oh…and your anecdotal nonsense equals “please”.

$1:
I'm only interested because I noticed that on facebook, there are more Habs fans than leaf fans, despite the fact that there are 4,000,000 Canadian users outside of Québec (1,000,000 in Toronto alone) and only 450,000 in all of QC. You would think that there would be many more leaf fans considering there are 9 times more people to draw from, if the leafs are in fact Canada's team.

“Facebook” ?!?!?!? This is your empirical evidence? Hey, want to compare “google” searches as evidence too? Maybe Leaf fans simply don’t use Facebook in the same numbers. Nice misread of stats though.

$1:
I will gladly concede the point if anybody can furnish the numbers. I've looked around myself but can't find any actual evidence that the attendance, merchandise and popularity numbers are real and not just based on mass, wishful thinking on the part of frustrated fans or some slick marketing plan dreamed up by MLSE. Those guys have hoodwinked enough people in my opinion. I also would rather not fall victim to an urban myth such as the "UN proclaims Toronto most multicultural city in the world" story. I fell for that one, only to find out that there never was any such proclamation.

You claimed Montreal was the most popular team in Canada so the onus is on you to substantiate that claim. Oh…and why would broadcasters favor the Leafs (as you say) if there weren’t profit or other incentives in it? Surely you aren’t suggesting altruism

$1:
At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself why anybody under 40 would choose to be a leaf fan. The other 5 Canadian teams have all either won the Cup or at least made it to the finals in the modern era. What would motivate a person to choose one of the worst teams in professional sports, the only team that has played under .500 and never made the finals since expansion, as their favourite team? I ask myself this, and I can never come up with a logical answer. It just doesn't make any sense

“Fan” is short for “fanatic”, genius. It sort of implies a lack of logic and a more emotional attachment. Maybe the difference between a Leafs fan and Habs fan is that the former is a fan and the later is a bandwagon jumper.

$1:
o answer your question, I've lived in Halifax, Montréal, Toronto, Oakville, London, Sarnia, Calgary, Banff, Burnaby, Vancouver, Houston TX, Chattanooga TN, Edinburgh Scotland, Melbourne and Perth Australia. I've met a couple of people along the way including quite a few leaf fans, and I always try to drop a little change into their cups!.

So? And you’ve met ALL of Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Oakville, London (and I care how many in Tennessee are Leafs fans?), etc? I doubt it. Unless you’ve got some tangible evidence instead far flung anecdotes, all we’ve got is your opinion. And that doesn’t count for much.

Go Mustang.....keep shootin from the hip !

An overerly expensive and unnecessary purchase if you ask me.

I can live without knowing what they all eat for breakfast or watching interviews with their wives and girlfriends discussing juggling children and a busy game schedule.

Just win some games in a row will ya.

TORONTO, ONTARIO (CP) - A seven-year-old Toronto, Ontario boy was at the center of a Toronto city courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible.
The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her.

When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Toronto Maple Leafs, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

Yes, but the Leafs are the only team with their own TV channel. So, if the Habs are so popular outside of Quebec, wouldn't they also have a TV channel? Yes, Leafs TV is only available in Ontario but Ontario also has Habs fans, Bruins fans, Wings fans, Senators fans and more but the Leafs can still run a viable dedicated TV channel.

In terms of popularity and finances the leafs are #1. As mustang1 pointed out you can count large numbers of leafs fans at almost any road game.

That said the channel is expensive fluff.

Arctic_Menace @ Thu Nov 22, 2007 9:34 am

I'm a Habs fan. After all, my family only in the last generation emigrated from Quebec, but hockey loyalty to the Habs was there until the Sens came to Ottawa. Now the Habs take a back seat.

It's $4 dollars a months as a channel add-on, cheaper depending on what sports package you have. No, I am not a subscriber.

Habfanman @ Thu Nov 22, 2007 11:43 am

I found a poll! it is by no means definitive, but it's legit and it's a start.

It was conducted by Decima just prior to the start of the finals last year and the leaves are indeed Canada's team.

Overall, the numbers were:

TORONTO 24%
MONTRÉAL 22%
OTTAWA 15%
OTHER 3 39%

Among the 250 or so who described themselves as 'avid' fans

TORONTO 27%
OTTAWA 26%
MONTRÉAL 23%
OTHER 3 24%

Thank you all for providing ABSOLUTELY NO empirical evidence to go along with your incredibly weak, anecdotal arguments. This suggests to me that most online fora are not places where people gather to to learn anything, explore new ideas, or discover the truth; but rather venues where like-minded people congregate to to agree with each other, listen to themselves talk, and attack anyone who proposes anything which goes against their pre-existing beliefs.

Oh and evad54, that was a great critique, but you didn't back up ANYTHING that you said.

It's no wonder that the level of public discourse in Canada has hit an all-time low.

Now... talk amongst yourselves...

Not pissed, just a little bewildered that people will go to such great lengths to defend a point of view without knowing or even bothering to find out if they're right in the first place.
