"I'd tell them, this is Canada, and in Canada, we teach music and physical education in our schools. If you don't like it, leave. If you want to live under sharia law, go back to the hellhole country you came from or go to another hellhole country that lives under sharia law," said Kanwar, who is a professor emeritus of sociology at Mount Royal University in Calgary.

That might be putting things forcefully, but Kanwar says he is tired of hearing about such out-of-tune demands from newcomers to our country. "Immigrants to Canada should adjust to Canada, not the other way around," he argues.

Kanwar, who immigrated to Canada from Pakistan in 1966, says he used to buy into the "mosaic, official multiculturalism [nonsense]."

He makes it clear he is pleased and enjoys that Canada has citizens from every country and corner in the world, as it has enriched this country. But it's official multiculturalism -the state policy "that entrenches the lie" all cultures and beliefs are of equal value and of equal validity in Canada - that he objects to.

"Canada has an enviable culture based on Judeo-Christian values -not Muslim values -with British and French rule of law and traditions and that's why it's better than all of the other places in the world. We are heading down a dangerous path if we allow the idea that sharia law has a place in Canada. It does not. It is completely incompatible with the idea and reality of Canada," says Kanwar, who was the founder and president of the Pakistan-Canada Association and a big fan of official multiculturalism. Kanwar says his views changed when the people who joined his group badmouth Canada. They weren't interested in knowing Canadians or even in learning one of our official languages. They created cultural ghettos and the Canadian government helped fund it.

Kanwar started speaking out against the dangers of official multiculturalism and has been doing so ever since.

"He was saying in Urdu (the official language of Pakistan): 'Oh, God, protect us from the infidels, who pollute us with their vile ways,'" recalls Kanwar, a professor of sociology at Mount Royal College in Calgary.

"I stood up and grabbed him by the lapels, which was shocking even to me because I have never done anything like that in my life and I said: 'How dare you attack my country.' And then I addressed the crowd and said: 'I have known this man for more than 30 years and he has been on welfare for almost all of those years.' "

Kanwar chuckles at the memory.

"Then I said to this semi-literate man, 'you should thank me and those you call infidels.'

"He asked me why and I said: 'Because the taxes I pay are putting food on your table as are the taxes of the so-called "infidels.' "

Most Canadians and many Muslims would applaud Dr. Kanwar's righteous outburst. But guess which of the two men is no longer welcome at the Sarcee Tr. S.W. mosque?

Nice to see more and more immigrants speaking out against the rediculouse demands made by newcomers to our country, if more voices like his were raised maybe more would be heard, Unfortunately I think at this point I feel they are still the minority, but if he changes only 1 or 2 peoples minds than good has come from it.
