A Canadian Muslim cleric has been refused entry to Australia on security grounds.
Sheikh Bilal Philips, a Canadian citizen who lives in Qatar, was scheduled to speak at an Islamic conference in the southern city of Melbourne this weekend, and had applied for a short stay visa.
Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews has confirmed the cleric was refused the visa Australia on security grounds.
He says the Sheikh's name is on an alert list of people deemed to be of concern.
"In this case it was judged, on security grounds, that there was risk that the entry of the person into Australia is directly or indirectly a risk to national security," Mr Andrews said.
Reuters reports the Sheikh was deported from the United States in 2004 after being named an "unindicted co-conspirator" in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Centre in which six people died.
Correspondents say he supports a conservative form of Islam that approves of stonings and public execution for crimes, as well as marriage to young girls.
The website for the organisation running the Australian conference, Mercy Mission, says it still plans to bring the Sheikh to Australia at some stage if the government relents and he receives a visa.

Makes you proud to be a liberal doesn't it?
According to Statscan our Muslim population has been doubling every five years since the 1991 census. If this trend continues and none of them have babies then I reckon they will consititute the clear majority by 2050. If they start having children then new date is anyones guess.
The question is: with 50,000 so called loyal Canadians living in Lebanon should new Canadians be subject to actually having to live in Canada to retain their citizenship or should we encourage these pieces of garbage to keep out?
I'm going to just say something very bizarre....
Why do some of my fellow Liberals support these Religious Right from other Lands, but not North American Religious Right?
Odd how Tolerance works.
I don't support ANY Religious Right,
I would say that an Immigrant that becomes a citizen should stay in his or her new country at least 3 out of the first 5 years. This would take into account family matters such as death's marriages ect. that happen back in their former country where many relitives might still live.
As for Aus. not allowing in a Canadian who is a Muslim cleric that they feel is untrustworthy. Good for them. They are looking out for the best intrest of their nation and its population. People might not agree with them but then again its the Austrailans that the Gov. needs to look out for not the rest of the world.
Sigh, but of course we let him be a Canadian.

There are plenty of Taiwanese that carry Canadian, American and Australian passports, but they only have citizenship because mom and dad were there on student visas or mom jumped on a plane with a tourist visas when she was close to delivery. Most of the parents are doctors, professors, dentists, lawyers, wealthy business people and other professionals. My son goes to an international school and you have to hold a foreign passport to attend it. 97% of the student body is Taiwanese.
