Granby, Que., bans power tools on Sundays
Tuesday, August 25, 2009 CBC News
A Quebec municipality is banning the use of power tools on Sundays with a new bylaw that has angered some contractors in the region, who say they'll lose business under the regulation.
The town of Granby, east of Montreal, adopted the bylaw at a city hall meeting Monday night with a vote of 7-2, despite vocal opposition from local residents, who signed a petition denouncing the new anti-noise regulation.
The bylaw forbids people from using construction tools such as table saws and drills on Sundays.
"Every time we make a bylaw it's usually because the minority is not respecting the majority," said Granby Mayor Richard Goulet.
That's not a good enough reason to ban the use of power devices, said Sébastien Ouellet, a contractor who launched the petition to try to stop bylaw. "This bylaw makes no sense," said Ouellet. "It's going to mean we will lose out on business.
Ouellet collected almost 1,500 signatures from people opposing the regulation.
Réal DesGens, who signed the petition, predicts his power tool rental business will drop about 20 per cent once the rule takes effect.
Some people only have the opportunity to do home renovations or repairs on the weekend, and under the new bylaw, they'll have even less time, he said.
The bylaw allows the use of lawnmowers on Sundays.
Fines for a first-time offence will range from $150-$1,000.
The bylaw comes into effect at the end of August.
Wow, that is one of the most idiotic bylaws I have ever seen. Why the hell would you ban them outright, at least but the time limit say, between the hours of 0900 to 2100. Again it is Quebec, and they like to march to their own drum (regarless if it is out of rythem or not).
So whats wrong with a little quiet on a Sunday in a world running off its feet?
I thinks its a good idea ...
Other then the fact that contractors will lose a day, businesses will lose money and it generally being an inconvenience. I thought most of them would be in church half the day anyway....
I think it also bans lawnmovers on sunday.

Read the article. It says it allows lawnmowers.
It's a bogus bylaw.
Oh god, what did we do...

The real losers here won't be contractors, It'll be DIYers like me that are too cheep and too handy to hire a contractor.
They only have two full days in a week to get any given reno done. You've just cut their time in HALF!
I would likely get in trouble over that law... depending on how anal my neighbors are.

I just realized something………..Sunday could now be another golf day if you can’t work at home. I take back the fucking commie comment………..
Are their "Do It Yourself-ers" in Quebec? I thought they all just whined so much the federal government fixed it for them.
Tjey should do a protest march with gas powered blowers.

We already have laws that protect "Quiet Enjoyment" of ones property. We don't need new, more specific laws like this nonesense.
Robair @ Tue Aug 25, 2009 8:10 pm
Calm down Lemmy, a guitar is not a power tool.

I remember when I was young, you didn't do any work on Sundays.
All work was outlawed by the Catholic church.
Businesses were all closed, I think restaurants were open and that's it.
This is a strange law, especially that you can still mow your lawn.
I agree with Guy_Fawkes that there should have been time limits.

Oh. Maybe it's in another place than Granby but there's a place that wants to ban any noisy "tools" on sundays. They have talked about that on a radio show here since last week.
