THE LAW IS THE LAW
I hope this makes its way around CANADA several times over!!!
So if the CANADIAN government determines that it is against
the law for the words "under God" to be on our money, then,
so be it.
And if that same government decides that the "Ten
Commandments" are not to be used in or on a government
installation, then, so be it.
And since they already have prohibited any prayer in the
schools, on which they deem their authority, then so be it.
I say, "so be it," because I would like to be a law abiding
Canadian citizen
I say, "so be it," because I would like to think that smarter
people than I are in positions to make good decisions.
I would like to think that those people have the Canadian
Public's best interests at heart.
BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I'D LIKE?
Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot
post His Commandments in Government buildings, I don't
believe the Government and its employees should
participate in the Easter and Christmas.... celebrations
which honor the God that our government is eliminating
from many facets of Canadian life.
I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday,
Thanksgiving & Easter. After all, it's just another day.
I'd like our Government to be in session on Christmas,
Good Friday,Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays.
After all, it's just another day.
I'd like ALL Representatives to not have to worry about
getting home for the "Christmas Break." After all ~~~
it's just another day.
I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved,
if all government offices & services would work on Christmas,
Good Friday & Easter. It shouldn't cost any overtime since
those would be just like any other day of the week to a
government that is trying to be "politically correct."
In fact....
I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially
set aside for worshipping God...) because, after all, our
government says that it should be just another day....
What do you all think????
If this idea gets to enough people, maybe our elected
officials will stop giving in to the minority opinions and
begin, once again, to represent the majority" of ALL of
the people. SO BE IT...........
PASS THIS ON...
HELP RETURN SANITY TO CANADA!!
The current holidays are a historical hold-over from when our country was virtually 100% christian and people didn't care as much about separation of church and state.
The fact that those national holidays are still on the same dates is not an argument for integrating or maintaining religious concepts in governmental affairs.
I think that separation of church and state is a pretty damn good idea. Any government of a country with over a quarter of its population which does not adhere to the majority religion has no business discussing God in an official context.
One of the things that bugs me about every single US presidential speech is that they always slip in "God bless America".
If you believe in a God that would bless a political entity, then we don't believe in the same God.
And yes, I believe in God, so from a religious point of view, I am NOT a minority.

Net Abuser seen that particular note floating around for some time, in fact I e-mailed a copy to my MP (who is liberal). Funny that I recieved no reply! I agree with you 100% if theses arseholes want to remove every shred of our history and heritage, then they should not benefit from them!
Ignoring our past seems to be a sport in Canada (politicians thinking that D-Day took place in Denmark!). What we don't ignore we try to change, sorry to dissappoint you folks but it was the French and English that founded this country, not the Asians or Africans! That's not racism, its fact.
What we need to remember that if we try to please everyone we end up pissing off everyone!
CamCK any country that 25% of the people don't adhere to the principle religion would imply that 75% do! If you really believed in a true separation of church and state then you would agree that our government should not get the religous holidays!
Since when has "Under God" ever been on Canadian Currency? Or are you referring to the talk about having the preamble of the Bill of Rights changed to remove the line "affirming that the Canadian Nation is founded upon principles that acknowledge the supremacy of God"?
With regards to the holidays, those should be changed so that the government has to work them just like the rest of us. Having Government services availble at all times would be great too. Then you wouldn't have to miss work or use vacation time just to deal with a government office.
Even better they should abandon all religous observances altogether, eliminating any favoritism towards any religion. They can set up new secular holidays around the same time as the existing ones. Winter Solstice celebrations can replace Christmas, Vernal Equinox to replace Easter, Harvest days to replace Thankgiving, etc.
All Canadian citizen should be able to worship as they see fit as long as it does not infringe on anyone elses rights and freedoms and NO religion should be getting preferrencial treatment with regards to which are officially recognised holidays and which aren't.
Completing the separation of the church from the state should be a priority and will help move the country forward.
It doesn't matter what the actual days are called, they are considered days off. Just change the names. There is "Holiday Season" around the 25th of December, Saturday/Sunday are "The Weekend", etc etc. I personally would rather not have any government tell me who my God is/isn't. How about we allow freedom of religion.
hmmm...I think we already have that.
Christianity is not the only show in town. We have to remember that we are who we are because of acceptance of people regardless of belief, and we are free to make choices.

I second many of the points presented, although recognize how difficult it will likely be to eliminate or rename long-standing holidays. Should this prove unsuccessful, the flip side of the coin would be to just add more holidays (or MORE DAYS OFF, not just 'acknowledgements' that these holidays exist).
But as 2Cdo rightly pointed out, when you try to please everyone, you end up pissing all of them, No doubt postponing mail and banks for all of,.. say,... Hanukah and Ramadan would improve your current predicament.
Ah well, if neither proves successful, guess we'll just have to accept and continuing working with the fact that all laws are bound to invite inconsistent interpretations. Probably more idealic to have "Gradients" rather than set-in-stone "Laws",... if you can manage the extra hassle. ^_-
Oh, and definitely make sure that NO ONE touches your beloved currency. The motto "In God We Trust" takes up a lot of precious space on US coins, and was first added in 1863 as [essentially] a subtle propaganda ploy during the American Civil War. Course, the issue also begs to ask why there's foreign royalty depicted on ALL Canadian coin reverses, but I guess that discussion is better left for another day.... ^_____^'
"God save the Queen"
Hmm?
What about this?
No religion of any kind has any business being directly involved with the government of Canada in any way.
What we could do is perhaps do like England and call days off Bank Holidays. (if there are any Brits around, perhaps they could explain what the hell those are)
Either way, we could use more days off. Who in Canada would care if we got a day off for Pentecost or sometinh else like that like people do in Europe?
And 1964, I was under the impression that "In God we Trust" was addend to US currency in the 50's as a way to expose "godless" Communists?
Though some may disagree, Christmas and Easter haven't been religious holidays for years, and I don't need to go to church to deserve a weekend off from work. Call them whatever you want, but these holidays are still in place because people like an excuse to have a day off.
Why Christmas instead of Hanukah and Ramadan, or why not all three? As was pointed out already, there's more Christian, or at least Christian-based, families in Canada. As far as being fair to other religions, most people are able to celebrate them without national recognition, and I covered shifts for several Muslim fellows who wanted the day off at the end of Ramadan (the feast, I don't know much about it).
I like the sound of Alberta's Family Day, or whatever it is (the extent of my research on this subject). While I'm not happy with the fact that these holidays give other cultures a feeling of exclusivism, I'd rather keep my days off.
Nova Scotia is one of the provinces with the fewest statutory holidays (though we're the only province still banning Sunday retail); when are we going to get Alexander Keith's birthday recognised, or Blue Nose day?
Canada needs more long weekends!!
