OECD says Canada to lead G7 in growth for next 50 years

$1:
The Paris-based Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development predicts Canada will lead the Group of Seven industrialized economies in growth over the next half century.
In a report released Friday, the OECD says it expects Canada's real gross domestic product will average 2.2 per cent growth annually over the next 50 years.
Canada, it predicts, will be near the top on a per capita basis – possibly a truer measure of success — with only Japan sneaking ahead.
Of the other G7 nations, only the United States and the United Kingdom with 2.1 per cent average advances come close.
That doesn't mean Canada will beat all industrialized nations, however. Australia, New Zealand, Israel and Norway — whose economies are too small for admittance to the G7 club — are projected to experience even stronger average growth rates.

As long as a NDP federal government is never elected into power. When that happens we'll end up with a growth rate less than that of Greece or Spain.

The more I learn about economics, the less important I think economic growth is. As a society, we've already got way more than we need.

And the soil will be infertile, the rivers will stop flowing..
And there will only be a recession if Steven Harper isn't re-elected..
Idiot.

I thought that was supposed to happen in January of 06 when the "bogeyman" took office.

No, that was the structural deficit.

That thought has been floating around in my head for a long time.
On the other side, you still believe that government spending money that they don't have during a recession is a good thing.

Sounds comforting, but if the USA tanks, so will we.

Nope. China and India will have combined greater GDP than the G7 combined. We can keep doing what we do best, drawing wood and cutting water, just with new overlords. So what if they insist on bringing their own people to do the drawing and cutting, Canadians don't want those jobs and anyway are too dumb to be trained for them.

You make it sound as easy as getting a new euchre partner.
But there's no lead time with this stuff. It may happen quickly and not be something we can plan for 10 or 20 years down the road.
I disagree with your cynical view of what Canadians will do. We need good-paying industrial jobs. We don't need our own people to be undercut by importing cheap labour. God knows, we've already been put behind the 8-ball by outsourcing, and you want to let that sort of thing creep onto our own soil? I can hardly believe that. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and simply chalk it up to rhetoric.
andyt @ Tue Nov 13, 2012 10:39 am
You should note the tone in which I wrote that. Giving primacy to resource extraction certainly seems to be the CPC strategy. Which has basically been the Canadian sop since day one. We should all along have had a focus on value added, but we've basically allowed ourselves to be run like a colony. Suck out the profits and move on. BC's forest industry was big for that, for instance. Now it's oil.
The latter sentences you quoted are my bitterness about how blase Canadians are about importing people to do our jobs.
