Grim look at Canada compared to other countries.

$1:
Economy, environment, quality of life. Canada's international rankings are dropping

Canada, which turns a year older Tuesday, is not aging well, according to an annual report card that finds it is slipping further behind its peers economically, environmentally, and with regard to the health and quality of life of its citizens.

The Conference Board of Canada, in its annual report card, notes that it's a lagging performance that has eroded Canada's economic standing among the 17 most advanced economies to 11th from third in 1970s....

The biggest reason for the slide in Canada's economic performance is its low productivity, where it ranks 15th, the conference board said, adding that Canada has also failed to keep pace in the growing competition for global investment....

As compared to other power countries like....India, China, U.S, Russia.....I don't think we have anything to worry about. Especially comparing the age of the other countries. What, China is 3000 years old? India? Another Canadian article selling Canada short of itself. Nice one.

A recent Environics poll found nearly 70 per cent of respondents thought it was a positive thing for Canada's image that three million Canadians live outside the country.

10% of our population abroad? A good thing if they are there to broaden their horizons and then later return home.

Read the article I posted.. the 10% is questionable.. some immigrants are coming here to avail themselves of the milk and honey and either send $$$$ back to the homeland or go there and benefit from our cashcow country..

Being 15th in productivity in this case isn't necessarily bad. Trying to climb to number one would probably put us in some pretty seriously bad muck. This is not saying we should let ourselves slide, but that flying a little below the radar is not really a bad idea. Look around you, is there anything we don't have that we actually need? I think we're doing just fine.

Young countries have their own internal dynamics. Also, international comparisons are a poor source of motivation.

Realities of life. Turks in Germany send money home, as do Mexicans in the US. Same here.

It only proves that immigrants have big hearts.

Cut the red tape, allow more foreign direct investment, esp in Telecom, flight, and manufacturing sectors. Don't subsidize those sectors either. And we're good to go.

Most countries are subsidizing foreign companies as a way to (unfairly) "compete" for their capital.
