I have had to spend a small fortune adding metric to my tools but I still don't own a newton meter torque wrench.

Does a man ever own all the tools he "needs"? ;)

He should be born with those Tools Lily it is the skills he needs

I can't imagine light construction/carpentry ever making the switch to metric... feet and inches aren't really that complicated, and they've been ingrained into everything - who would know how many centimeters in your typical stud spacing, or how long a sheet of drywall is in meters?

Fact is, when you're dealing with a trade that functions almost exclusively by mentoring, apprenticeship, etc, making that leap over the fence is more hassle than need be.

That being said, I think the majority of large construction in general has made the switch (or should), because no engineer wants to deal with crunching numbers with kips and foot-pounds, and the tradespeople involved are more likely to be trained in a more formal environment (making that cross over much simpler).

Both methods have benefits, and should be kept for their respective functions... there's no need to have a single exclusive system.

We are very metric in Europe, but our construction supplies are 2.44m x 1.22 m... (8 x 4 ft) We use 2x4 too. Tools are metric, but in inches too... Our weight is measured in kilograms, distances in km. I just got to learn to measure my distances in hours

We used to call it a 2-6.

Never heard it called that.

2-4, when the West started selling cases of beer like that and of course from Easterners, yeah.
One way to tell a long time Westerner (pre 2-4 )from an Easterner? For them a case of beer is 12.

@CanuckNS: That's what I'm talking about right there!

Come to Daddy...

Apparently there are more than one metric system out there....and Canada stupidly adopted "the one used by most of the world" = the 3rd world who are mostly illiterate and don't measure anything and don't even have clocks.

Japanese and Europeans just shake their heads......

Explain "more than one metric system".

Sorta like Imperial Gallons VS US gallons.

What we still call a mickey == 26-er== the Yanks call a fifth.

US quart = 32 floz----Imperial 40 floz..........

None of those things are metric, so I fail to see how that answers my question, Mr. Rolling Eyes.

Canada uses the metric SI like everyone else.

And anyone, who just read that .would not be saying...

" what kind of an idiot typed that?"

That sounds like something moron would say

:D

I like them both depending on which seems bigger or in other cases smaller .

With the metric system mens appendages and womens breasts are bigger and you go faster on the highway but at the same time peoples butts are bigger and you're cold in the winter because it's always minus something and rarely plus anything .

Istanbul @ Fri Apr 13, 2007 9:25 pm

I prefer metric because I am a natural idiot.

Today I said a miss was as good as 1.609 killometers and every one thought I was a dork.
