Amazing, the right wingers talking about a command economy here. That's the sort of shit that the USSR did, and it doesn't seem to have panned out for them.

If not, they all go to TO, or to visit you, so you should support it. :)

Since it wont work without commands to develop the North,
and since those commands are unconstitutional,

the entire idea actually can't be supported... only in theory.

Read my post above Boots. The Charter stops us from saying where immigrants should live.

Yeah, I didn't see it until after I posted this...

Timmins, SSM, Thunder-bay, Sudbury, and some god forsaken place called Sturgeon Falls.

If the money was in the North, I would have no qualm moving up there for good.

People will flock where there is money, growth, and opportunities for advancement (i.e, Fort McMurray).

That ain't the north, any more than Edmonton is, at least not to me anyways.

When I think North, I think the territories.

When I think 'north' I think Oregon.

Yep. No Wal-Mart in Goose Bay. I liked it there but 3 years was enough.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

From someone from GTA/Central Canada/the Maritimes, Thunder Bay is north, but for just about anyone living in the west, it's south.

We used to get Brits asking for the bus schedule to Vancouver when they landed in Goose Bay.

They already do go to TO, and they don't just visit Vancouver but stay here.

Even if it was legal to force people to settle in the north, and by north I mean anything more than 200 km from the US border, since that is where most of us live, there's nothing for them to do up there. Having the govt put in heavy subsidies to lure people up there will just result in failure, if there's no enduring reason for people to be there in the first place. You can create Potemkin villages all you want, but it won't jump start an economy. Even in NWT, the diamond mining is coming to an end, and with it will be a loss of population. Unemployment is always more fun in the south.

Maybe we should do an Australia. Tell the world give us your criminals and pay to house them, and we'll settle them in the north. After a few generations, they seem to turn into perfectly nice people. The native war drums would be banging over that scheme tho.

Proculation @ Mon Jun 21, 2010 12:47 pm

I don't agree. More immigration would mean more different cultures and we all know that means more Islam which is dangerous to our western culture.

As long as they build a nice long waterway to keep 'em on their side

for 100 - 150 years, no probs.

Dont forget the women prisons ! :)

Sorry, but it would have to be cash on the barrel head to pay for their upkeep. Broke nations need not apply. I was thinking more of China. Especially their political prisoners.

Outside of southern Ontario, that's considered southern Canada.

Well the north does need more restaurants, grocery stores and doctors.

NWT, Yukon, and Nunavut are largely unexplored as far as Resources is concerned. There will be plenty of opportunities, especially for Offshore Oil/NG.
