if all schools were bilingual then there wouldnt be a problem.. both languages could be taught like any other subject and future generations would be fluent in both official languages..money well spent..

The premier of New Brunswick said recently against the immersion program: there is a tradeoff between learning a second language and learning another subject.
What is the subject she is missing?

Agreed, I see nothing wrong with bilingualism. What does it hurt to teach the next generation a second language? Sure it may consume some resources to accomplish this but I just can't see what the argument against furthering our children’s education and incorporating bilingualism is. I can't speak a lick of French myself and it is one of the things I truly regret not learning.
I take a lot of pride in the fact that Canada is bilingual.

A second language can learn and sadly forget after schooling.

Having some knowledge is better than none and if it were a mandatory course in grade schools it would be inevitable that the fluency in French would increase over time.
Besides, it’s not just about learning the language. It’s exposing our children to other cultures and expands their awareness of other cultures which over time builds respect and tolerance.

Maths, she is in grade 1 and takes math. In French. She will be able to be in a French Immersion school until Grade 8 and then enters High School in a school with two streams, one in English and the other in French. She will be required to take the same classes as any other high school student, just in French. Entry into University is excellent for French Immersion students, actually higher than students in the English program. Perhaps because French immersion students tend to have more motivation.

Forced labor or study is less productive than voluntary labor or study.

Would you say that is true of Math as well? Or how about the metric system?

Great paper. Now why don't you go ask a couple of 25 year olds who took french immersion how they feel about being bilingual. They might dissagree. Hell, why don't you just ask Kenmore or any one else on this forum how they feels about being bilingual. You'll probably get some negative responce of course but I bet a good majority of them will take great pride in the fact they can speak two langages.

When I was teaching at collegial level, I was getting bad answers most of the time.

Well Benoit, I'm not bilingual and I wish I had learned French. Do wish you weren't bilingual? It's one thing to be bilingual and not appreciate it, quite another not to be and to wish you had been given the opportunity to learn anouther language.
Benoit @ Thu May 01, 2008 8:26 pm
This petition is about stopping the policy of bilingualism because it is too expensive. I have learned English by myself in my 20s because I was motivated to stop that kind of short-sightedness.

Not many people have the opportunity to learn a second language after they leave school.
You call me short sighted? That’s funny because I was thinking exactly the same thing about you.
