I think Canada should be doing a lot more here, considering we have an 8 billion surplus. The government wastes more money than that probably on a daily basis.

Yeah, I'm just wondering how long until people start hating on the US for the aid they give  I mean, I'm sure it won't take long, considering some guy already said the West was being stingy.

JohnnyB, I think it's allready started, I think in this case Canada could really step up to the plate and take a leadership role. I mean wasn't Paul Martin saying how he wanted to give Canada a more important role in the world. Well here's his change. Hopefully these politico's get off there asses and Pony up, as a Canadian taxpayer I say go for it. :D

Yeah, I mean Canada actually has a surplus and they are giving less than the US. Not to knock what they are already giving, but everyone is expecting the US to give millions, and they are in a huge debt, while here's Canada who has the perfect chance to give millions and be right up there. Of course, there's people in your own country who could probably also use that money. The US is just starting though. I mean, I think the thing that people don't understand is that people have to work out all the economics. Helping people is great, and the US is already giving 35 million, plus it cost money to run 12 ships or so, and lets not forget that the US said they are going to give more, but you don't want to be stupid and sink your economy even more so that you pay in the long run.

The west is being stingy, and that isn't just or mostly the US. I really don't care if George Bush agrees or not, though I do find it telling that his feelings were apparently hurt by a statement that included a lot more countries than the US.

Canada should be giving a hell of a lot more though...not just more in cash terms, although we could certainly do more there too, but more in equipment and manpower. We should have a Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unitset up and running already. We should be offering to at least pay the way for aid workers.

I don't know if I've brought it up here, but I've argued that Canada should have a civilian aid agency before....kind of like peace keepers, but without the military overtones. This is a perfect example of why. Put 'em on military planes (which we also don't have) and get them to where they are needed ASAP. It should be an integral part of our budget.

That'd be perfect because they have been saying that disease in the water is one of the main concerns right now because the decomposition happening.

It is perfect, and it's a wonderful piece of technology. I don't know if we have any spares that we could use (they might be tied up in Afghanistan) but we should have some and they shouldn't require a military operation to use.

I agree 100% that would be an awesome idea

That's awesome, I'm feeling alot better about my country now. What good is being the best country in the world if you don't help the people that need it. [flag]

Yeah, 80,000 dead people and we're sending a recon team to see if the survivors could use some help. Of course they could use some help. A few men with spades to help dig graves with would be a bonus at this point. Some people with some training and some equipment would be a godsend.

The money is a step in the right direction though...$4 million is little more than pocket change, in reality. $40 million is more like it, although if Martin can't manage to find a little more we should likely start cutting off his fingers one at a time until he smartens up. It's not like it's his money, after all.

Come to think of it, he's in Morrocco. That's a hell of a lot closer to the problem than most. Maybe he could do his own recon. It doesn't have to be an offical visit...it isn't like he's going to be noticed in the crowd. Maybe we should let him keep his fingers so he can work a spade.

Good for Canada. Hopefully this will make the US give more money because the US wants to be the leader.

Johnnybgoodaaaaa @ Fri Dec 31, 2004 12:04 pm

Looks like the United States just upped their amount of aid to 350 million.

The Canadian government is going to match all private donations to NGOs until at least Jan 11 too. That should bring in a big chunk of change.

feeko @ Fri Dec 31, 2004 5:53 pm

Hmm bill gates gave what 35 mil?
U.S. Catholic charities 53 mil.......

that right there is more than most countries,

the list of private U.S. donations will no doubt also be huge.
