If I remeber correctly before 9/11 the Americans biggest concern seemed to be China. But since then attention has been shifted to Iraq and North Korea. Could China possibly be quetly moving against the US? I think so.

China and the War on Terror

I feel you are right. I believe that the day the USSR desolved became the day that China Shifted a majority of their strategic interest toward the Americas.

There is good China may become the world's next superpower.

We only use the good China when company comes.

I doubt China will become a super-power before the EU does. The EU can operate with less dependence on the US and their relationship is more reciprocal. If the US was to cut off trade with China the cost would be immense to both parties but devastating to China.

China cannot stretch it's military muscle to become a military super-power without undermining its ability to be am economic power.

China has a long history of deciption in war and a long memory. If the US forces were to get tied down in the Middle East then China my decide they have a golden opprotunity to conquer Taiwan. Such a move would expand China's influence in Southeast Asia and possibly cause South Korea and Japan to reavaluate there alliances.

South Korea possibly. There is a huge amount of anti-American sentiment there right now. I don't think China will suddenly ally itself with China though...there are longstanding and deep animosities there. I could see Japan joining forces with "Old Europe" though.

I was talking with a friend earlier tonight who was saying that the US loves the rift developing in Europe over the invasion of Iraq. He thinks that the Bush Administration sees any possible rift in the EU as an advantage for the US.

I hadn't really thought about it before, but I think my friend has a point.

I think your friend has a point too. The EU is currently dominated by France and Germany. France has always pushed her own agenda regardless of what the US or the rest of the world thinks and more often then not expresses anti-Americanism. The current German leader came to power because of a his anti-American stance so the US would just love to see ether 1) the EU splitup or 2) French and German influence diluted by an influx of new pro-American member states

Er...I meant Japan will not suddenly ally itself with China of course. As far as I know China is already allied with China.
