This has nothing to do about firearms, Bart is correct on this one, they can happen anywhere, US, Canada even a virtually gun free Germany.
We need to focus more on the mental health aspects than the tool, or should we ban knives? vehicles? lets not let the few deranged individuals dictate what should or should not happen. If you want to apply the same logic, then you should never go to a movie, a crowded night club etc ever again. I won't and I don't live in fear and I refuse to let these nut jobs occupy another fleeting second in my thoughts other than..I am glad their dead.

Given that the German system, as good as it is, wasn't able to prevent a mentally ill pilot from crashing an airliner into a mountainside on purpose it's kind of a stretch to assume it's stringent gun control system is going to have a 100% success rate. That's one of the many problems in current dilettante thinking. You can't have 100% safety on anything. Not with guns. Or trains. Or pipelines. Or mental health care. Or anything else either. A mature society would understand this instead of reactionary thinking up more freedoms to get rid of for everyone else just because a handful of malcontents, maniacs, incompetents, fraudsters, criminals, or degenerates can't live within the rules.

This is due to a couple of factors:

Looks like they know how to do it right in Germany. But they should go for annual psychiatric evaluations for everybody that owns of gun. Of course if they tried that in the US, they'd have to confiscate all those millions of guns since so many people would fail.
