In Holland I can live safely as long as I don't openly criticize muslims........

That's what it's about, do people in Canada get death threats if they criticize or do a satire on christianity? I don't think so. If people disagree, they should discuss their differences and not throw around boycots and fatwa's.

Lots of people are dead or in hiding because muslims have real long toes.

No, they normally get a comedy show on the CBC  But hey I am an atheist so anyones reaction to religion confuses the hell ( no pun intended ) out of me.

all i can say is, i don't approve of it but its their right to draw what they want. The muslims have their knickers in a knot over this because it disrespects their religion....what percentage of Danes are muslim? I am sure there is much more attacks on Christianity in Denmark then there is attacks on Islam. Why should the government go out of its way to please a minority and ignore similar issues suffered by a much larger group. For example our School used to have a Christian Club that met once a week at lunch. However it was banned, but Muslims still get friday prayer services...I'm all for religious tolerance as long as its tolerance for ALL religions not just a select few.

About 5% of the Danish population is Muslim if you include people who don’t have citizenship but are legally in the country the percentage is about 8% the total population is about 5,2 million – that means the Muslim population is about 250.000 (5%).

$1:
Poor mohammed at the peep show
Kick the beggar down the stairs
Can't keep guard, he's old and feeble
Steal his books, burn his prayers
Poor mohammed at the keyhole
Sit him by the kitchen door
Slop his food all around the table
Let him lick it off the floor
Put mohammed in the cellar
Keep him there 'til half past ten
Ties some bacon to his beard
Let the rats out on him there

Procol Harum

$1:
Ahab, The Arab
Let me tell you 'bout Ahab The Arab
The Sheik of the burning sand
He had emeralds and rubies just dripping off 'a him
And a ring on every finger of his hands

He wore a big ol' turban wrapped around his head
And a scimitar by his side
And every evening about midnight
He'd jump on his camel named Clyde...and ride

Songs are okay; it's the pictures that get to them, I guess.

On a side note, anyone hear of the piece of hair they have locked away that supposedly is Mohammed's? I wonder if it's been well enough preserved to get some DNA, and we could clone him... then we'd know what he looked like, and the whole mess would be solved!

Or, to put it another way, our sense of the rightness of freedom of speech is at least as important as a Muslim's sense of the rightness of his religion.

This is compounded by the fact that, while the Muslims are trying to force their religious beliefs on the Danes, the Danes weren't forcing their artistic commentaries on the Muslims.

That is the sad truth – but I just hope it’s only going to cost me and my countrymen some money and not our freedom of expression!

Don't give up so easily.

You are a Viking, damn it! Stand up and fight for what you believe in!

Funny how artists in America run anti-Christian exhibits like "Piss-Christ" depicting the crucified Jesus in a jar of urine.

But Clinton doesn't get worked up over that.

I've yet to hear the Pope issue a "Fatwah" over it either.

Regrettably as it is way too usually the political reaction toward non tolerant Muslims is very passive – I’m not saying that every western country should start bashing all Muslims that is no way to show respect.

But respect and tolerance must work both ways! And these cartoons was an internal Danish matter with no reference to the Muslim countries – we must be allowed to practice our freedom of expression inside our own borders. Just as the Muslims must be allowed to practice their religion accounting to their standards inside their own countries.

Good point.

It seems to me there are lots of folks in the western world who "blaspheme" christianity and no one bats an eye. Those pictures may have been insulting and in bad taste but the muslims need to get over it. They are far too unforgiving and it is so tiring to hear how they are so willing to murder over something like this. They have no problem slaughtering other human beings yet can't handle some cartoons? Typical way-over-do-it response from the muslims. You must respect me but I don't have to respect you. Respect me or else I'll kill you.

This is just another example of the media and arts communities and their obsession with the culture of offence, it seems no art piece is considered worthy these days unless it offends someone. Religion's always been an easy target, I mean what other target is there were people have faith and will be guaranteed to react. First they started with the Christians now they've moved on to the Muslims.
What amuses me is how for these arts types and journos freedom of speech has become a religion, a totally infallible one at that. Me I don't think these cartoons should be censored but neither do I think the newspaper and artists should throw their arms up and act as if they're innocent parties in the whole affair they knew what would happen and aas fair as I can see these cartoons of Mohammed don't offer much in terms of groundbreaking insight.

I think they aimed to bring the issue to the light, so to speak, and this global attention is likely exactly what the journalists needed to fight for thier rights. This imagery of Muhammed is likely just a symbol of the feeling of oppression they feel from religion in general.

Delwin @ Tue Jan 31, 2006 7:47 pm

Many great societal advances have come as a result the questioning of our own faith. There was a time when speaking out against a geocentric system of the universe was concidered blasphemy, Copernicus and Galileo were persecuted by the church for it. In Divinci's time, it was blasphemous to cut up a human body, he disobeyed this and mapped the human anatomy. Countless, revolutions and wars were faught and are being faught in the name of religion, and it is in our nature to question the source of our problems.
