In a secret ballot in the European Parliament on July 16, von der Leyen, a close ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, received 383 votes, only nine more than the 374 required — the lowest margin since the position of President was established in 1958. She will take over from Jean-Claude Junker in November 2019 for a five-year term.
Votes? Oh yeah, some election when she was the only candidate. Very reminiscent of the communist regimes.

What's hilarious here is even though this apparatchik was the only candidate she still didn't get all the votes!!!

Probably why Putin doesn't like the EU. They aren't getting it right if she couldn't even get all the votes. They're making left-wing authoritarianism look bad.

It's not an election. Only one person was put forth for any given position. Then there was a vote of for or against.

Well it does fit this definition. Just look at the EU parliament as a "Population"

Election - Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Election

An election is a formal group decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold public office. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy has operated since the 17th century. Elections may fill offices in the legislature, sometimes in the executive and judiciary, and for regional and local government.

It's not an election in the traditional sense of having multiple candidates that people vote for. There isn't, it's just a yes or no for the one candidate.

Making this statement meaningless from someone who doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. As per usual.

True but She got voted in. Look's like by a slight bit. Curious IF she or he had not been voted in, what would have happened next?

The European Council would likely have to put forth another option.

I predict Boris Johnson will either, be the greatest British Prime Minister since Winston Churchill or, will crash and burn so badly that he'll make the Hindenburg look like a camp fire. [B-o]

Johnson’s prospects do not look great. He’s a brilliant chap with a talent for funny lines and jingoistic speeches but has shown little evidence of the steely discipline that will be needed to achieve Brexit, win an election and keep the UK together. There’s a world of a difference between becoming PM through the back door of a party vote and running the country.

Genuine question because I don’t understand them myself - why are those commas there?

Johnson is less of a concern than with Trump because in the parliamentary system the leader is somewhat held in check. A “mad king” leader in the parliamentary system can be removed by a simple vote of non-confidence by the party caucus or in parliament , unlike a president who can basically only be removed by impeachment.

So unlike Trump Johnson will be forced to seek and maintain the support of the party caucus and until he survives a general election he has no claim to a mandate from the people or political capital that he can leverage. Even if he survives the election, depending on the results even he may not have much capital if he only barely manages to eke out a win.

For emphasis. You pause before you give your point of view which gives it much more dramatic effect. Well that and the rule which states more than 4 words normally need a comma, a fact which is clearly ignored or forgotten with today's authors, myself included. [B-o]

$1:
As a rule of thumb, if the phrase is longer than about four words, use the comma. You can also use a comma with a shorter phrase when you want to emphasize it or add a pause for literary effect.

Only if you want that "dramatic effect" and FFS don't use them all up. There are only so many comma's left in the world and, if everybody uses them wastefully, there'll be none left for future generations. [B-o]
