But what difference does it all really make? Bush got away with it. We all know he went to war for reasons other than what he claimed. We all know he didnt give a shit about liberating the Iraqi's. the first thing he did was get on TV and ask the Iraqi's not to burn the oil fields. Then the first thing his troops did was capture the oil fields. WE all know this is where all the Iraqi's are. Imagine their surprise when they took the oil fields and there where no Iraqi masses begging for liberation.

He isnt going to be punished for it! They got away with it. So why is some guy coming out and confirming our suspicions matter?

He hasn't gotten away with it yet, Evan. He has, in a very real way, commited war crimes and broken international and US military law with the laws governing occupations.

There is an election coming up and if the entire world keeps talking about the crimes committed, then there is at least a chance that the US media will start running the stories and the US people will unelect him. More than that, there is also a chance that the US will join the civilised world in the agreement to live by the rules of the ICC and Bush could, before he dies, end up in a docket in The Hague with a lawyer attached to each ear and a panel of dour-looking judges glaring at him.

Think it can't happen? That's what they said about Pinochet and Milosevic.

Until the US and its leaders are held to the same standards as the rest of the world we cannot truly move forward.

I hope he does have to pay for his crimes. Saddam may have been a monster. But he was a monster that was given teeth by the US. When he didnt do what the US thought he would they attack his country and kill his people. Of course the US doesnt see it that way.

Remember the Magna Carta (Great Charter) signed by one of England's Kings... I forget who, and when though.... Anyway, the Magna Carta eliminated arbitary arrest in England, and greatly limited the Kings powers... It also said that "Nobody is above the law". This has been remember through out the centuries and is still common in every "free civilized" nations laws... I figure... And it is probably the same in International Laws as well... So thats why I think anyone that breaks an International Treaty, even if we've ignored it (like some of the USSR's old leaders) should be tried... Especially Bush... But remember, if we go after Bush, we have to go after everyone....

Yup...everyone, everywhere. Same court too...none of this being tried in the country of your captor's choice. Like I said, we got Pinochet and we got Milosevic. Those are big fish, relatively. Almost every major power in the world is harbouring a dictator or two who fell out of favour with his country.

The important thing about trying Bush (and Kissinger, and Reagan, and Bush Sr, and Bill Clinton) for the crimes they've been accused of is that it will show very clearly that nobody is above the law. That should make it clear to others that they can't get away with it either.

I never thought of that Rev... Next time I'm being tried for War Crimes I'll say, well, Bush was doing it... ;)

Laconfir @ Wed Jan 14, 2004 4:51 pm

... One of the Bush's best friends... If it wasn't for them people who commit war crimes and are also known terrorists would not have a place to hide... And its a good thing Saudi Arabia has oil that they share! Cause if they didn't then the US might come in looking for us eh Rev? ;)

Ever watch Robin Williams: Live on Broadway?

Funny as hell... One of the jokes is about tighter security:

Then you see security patting down a young boy
"What are you doing? Your not a preist" Says the boy...
