Are we doing enough for our military people?
State your opinions and why

Canadaka @ Fri Sep 06, 2002 8:09 pm

I'm no expert on the subject but I think our armed forces don't need a larger military but better equipment and tools then they have now. And I think Canada should continue its roll as a peace keeping force, and not follow a military policy like that of the States

I agree. Just look at all the problems with the Sea Kings. Just update the equipment.

Lachdanan @ Thu Sep 12, 2002 11:39 pm

We need an immediate cash infusion into the military. 2billion$ yesterday. we should up our personel from 60k to 100k and start updating our equipment and resupplying our current stock.

It is a crime that we do not support our military.

I have to disagree with you on the peace keeping thing, yes we should have some, but dont forget that "peace keepers" are soldiers in a peacekeeping role, they still train for war on a regular basis, When a war comes you will be glad that they are there... Soldiers are essential not only as a tool in the international arena but as ambassadors to Canada...

I was watching CTV last night and they said that the canadian military would have to be recalled from all foreign assignments for the period of 2 years in order to go through a renovation. And they are asking for 4 billion.
But can Canada afford to pull out from all military ventures, how will this hurt Canada's international relations, and Sovereignty. We need to fix what the liberals have messed up, and restore our military's dignity. Even with 4billion upgrade, we only will be on par with a country like Portugal, i find that very sad.

Yep...

jmjinks @ Tue Nov 19, 2002 6:42 am

I think we do plenty for the rest of the world without sticking our noses into "peacekeeping missions", as we so like to call them. We give financial aid to countries in need, we have helped those who faced hurdles after horrific antural disasters. We as Canadians were more than happy to donate our time and our blood to NYC after 9/11. Should we have to fight other people's wars in order to show our support to other countries? Not neccessarily.

Malice @ Tue Nov 19, 2002 8:14 am

Canada needs better equipment and support. Man power is not something they can fix, but they can increase funding to purchase new aircraft, uniforms and so on.

This is necessary as the Canadian Military is now a sad shadow of what it used to be.

RoyalHighlander @ Tue Nov 19, 2002 9:00 pm

They CAn fix the manpower issue, with better pay and conditions... There was a time not so long ago that families here in Edmonton had to go to the food bank to make ends meet... Military families...

eh2brute @ Wed Nov 20, 2002 5:11 pm

personally i think that the military is top heavy with the brass and other administrative functionaries

the few military personnel that i know don't want the most exspensive toys, they want toys that work and that they can afford
but alas, the bean counters seem to think that they are more necessary to the military than the soldiers or equipment are.

here is my suggestion to fix our problem
30% pay cuts across the board for ALL politicians
reduce administration by 1/4
raise enlisted salaries by 10%
HARSH penalties for military contracters that exceed budget requirements when developing new weapons and/ or equipment
incentives for all personnel who choose to make military a career
incentives for contacters who produce RELIABLE weapons and equipment
UNDER BUDGET

WHAT WE MUST REMEMBER AS A COUNTRY IS THAT OUR MILITARY IS OUR GREATEST ASSET IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND THAT IF THEY LOOK SHABBY WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT US AS A NATION

I beleive that statement is soo true, a lot of people who wonder why Canada should even bother to have a military should read read that.

washjeff @ Fri Nov 22, 2002 3:31 pm

come on now. canada as a "peacekeeping force?" canada's military is nothing. you hardly commit anything to nato and in the UN, you desperately try to separate yourselves from the united states

Canadaka @ Fri Nov 22, 2002 4:22 pm

Canada was one of the founding members of NATO and is the 6th largest contributor. So there.
