40 soldiers could join team training Iraqi forces in Baghdad

Martin would be an idiot to send any troops to Iraq as part of anything but a UN mission. There would be a huge political outcry from within his own party as well as from the NDP and BQ. If (more like when) any of our forces got killed it would ensure that Martin would not survive the next leadership convention.

What it comes down to in the end is that the majority of Canadians do not agree with this war, will not support Bush and his gang of thugs, and will not support anybody who is seen to be supporting Bush.

I agree Rev "Martin would be an idiot to send any troops to Iraq as part of anything but a UN mission." Or even better an official invitation by Irac new leader. I think we have a spot there now that the invasion is over. Sometimes you have to pickup the whole street after the guys next door throw a party.

Actually, Martin would be well advised to keep Canadian troops out of anything and everything in Iraq, regardless of the overseeing body, UN or otherwise. Considering Canadian troops have lacked the proper support and rotation relief on the last 10 overseas missions, they should be sent nowhere until a proper rebuilding of resources is completed.

That problem hasn't stopped Blair.

I won't argue with that, Hormel, but it's a political decision. Political decisions rarely take the people most directly involved into account.

I don't see our mistrust of George Bush as a problem, I see it as a sign of national character.

Not trusting Bush is not seen as healthy or pro-American by the people who support him. Soon Canada's policy's will be dictated by the like of O'Reilly, Coulter and that Idiot boy tie boy rather than by Canadians unless we make a radical change in how we see ourselves and how we go about the defense of this nation. There are a lot of Canadians who think that Canada will be a part of the US in as little as 10 years and that our protests about sovereignty are seen as nothing more than a nuisance. NorthCom is the future of Canada's defense and nationalism. Now if such a system is step up for the defense of our nation who will have the bigger say Mrs Coulter or our MP's? My money would be someone like a Coulter who has little knowledge and even more disdain for Canada but has the ear of the people who will be footing the bill for defense and who will ultimately be making the decisions.

In conclusion, if we want defense we better start paying for it. Right now the argument is we DON'T have to pay for BM'D' and that will mean we won't have to be bothered with having a country soon. I am not saying we should sign on to a system that has been shown not to work and is over budget or supporting the war in Iraq but we have to ante up on defense more that the 1.1% of GDP we are doing now and expand our international obligations. The days of using the UN to know where we should be is gone as the legitimacy of the the UN, rightly or wrongly, has been severely undermined and now Canadians themselves must decide what it is worth risking Canadian troops over NOT politicians to the south.

Hopper @ Wed Feb 09, 2005 6:30 am

To do anyhting for Bush as "a favour" would be political suicide. Canada has stood by the belief that any intervention has to be sanctioned by the UN - as such if the UN sanctions supporting the aftermath of this illegal invasion, then Canada would have to support the UN or lose all credibility.

Rev_Blair @ Wed Feb 09, 2005 8:05 am

Not really, Hopper. There are plenty of places that Canada can help the UN without going anywhere near Iraq.

Dan74 @ Wed Feb 09, 2005 9:44 am

The butchering of the Canadian Military is a price we must pay for letting it happen.
I have found few people that would say it was the right thing todo.
Canadian Peacekeepers are respected all over the world and are much needed in alot of places. With the road already taken by the Bush regime I do believe Canadians are the only ones that could send peacekeepers and beable to function. Not yet mind you but I think it maybe the only way to bring a conclusion to that mess and it should also be only if the U.S is outta there. This will never happen but a guy can dream.

canadian1971 @ Wed Feb 09, 2005 4:42 pm

How about this Dan,

U.S. troops pull out, all of them. U.N. peacekeepers go in. Yanks foot the bill. I'm sure alot of countries would offer troops as peacekeepers if they didn't have to worry about the cost, sad to say. I'm pretty sure the Iraqis would prefer this too.

Crazy? Am I just smoking to much pot here?

Booyah to that brother!

QBC @ Wed Feb 09, 2005 8:23 pm

Even if the US pulled out and the UN went in, the Iraqi's would still look at the UN troops as invaders sent by the US. I would not want to see any Canadian troops go anywhere near that US mess known as Iraq.

AdamNF @ Thu Feb 10, 2005 7:16 pm

This is a NATO action, if Canada is to remain in NATO its needs to do what NATO command says. There are 40 officers to train, no to fight. No combat soldiers will be sent.
