BEIJING (Reuters) - China will attack Taiwan if there is no other way of stopping it from becoming independent, one of the country’s most senior generals said on Friday, in a rhetorical escalation from China aimed at the democratic island Beijing claims as its own.
Speaking at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People on the 15th anniversary of the Anti-Secession Law, Li Zuocheng, chief of the Joint Staff Department and member of the Central Military Commission, left the door open to using force.

Apparently this threat is being taken quite seriously with the House Foreign Affairs Committee today appointing a select group to immediately consider arms sales to Taiwan.
Taiwan has requested forty older F-16 and twenty older F-18 fighters to be updated and transferred. As I recall, these planes were already being upgraded as of last year. Looks like they're being redirected to Taiwan from US Air National Guard deployments.

It's not enough to upset the balance of power, but it will slow down the PLA if the CCP tries something foolish.
