And that is we're not Americans as in not American citizens, that's about it . The feeling here is that in order to define something positive about Canada it has to be relative to something negative American. Do we really lack indigenous culture that much that we have to stoop to belittling the intellegence of Americans in order to define ourselves in a positive light? Please Canadians get off your high horses, Americans aren't that bad. American democrats and Canadian Liberals have far more in common than any definition you can put on Canadians as a whole. As a Canadian I really don't care if Americans know who our PM is just as I'm sure they don't care if I know who thier local state governor is, either way it's not a measure of intelligence or ignorance which ever side of the border you're on.

It really doesn't matter how similar we are to the americans, most canadians like myself would rather suffer through hell and back then to be considered the same. It's been like this for ages and there's no chance of it changing for a while, we're human after all. If, for example we were to merge with the Americans for whatever unknown and completely rediculous, and improbable reason, it wouldn't go too well with the general population. Anyways, my point is, we're not gonna be getting off our high horses soon, cause we kind of like it up here, and of course Americans aren't that bad...it's just the few general idiots with loudmouths that cause all the problems, we have those as well, but meh, oh well, every country has those.

Generally speaking, Americans aren't despicable.......Some of their politics are, as are some of ours.........I think one of the differences between our 2 countires is that on the whole, generally, the Americans think that the world revolves aound their country, where as we (in Canada) happen to know that it rotates on an axis around the poles........Therein lies the difference........We DO know whats happening in the US......Politics, television, gossip etc....Do they know who or what the Canadian Prime Minister is?We know about them because we're interested in something outside of our own borders.........

Not to say we don't care about whats happening in Canada, of course we do!
Everyone knows Chretien is a complete WACKO........But what it does say is that we know there is a world out there that isn't Canada...........Why do Yanks think that for the most part (and I don't believe this to be untrue) the world despises Americans, while as a Canadian, I am welcomed EVERYWHERE I travel while wearing the Maple Leaf? It's 'cause when I am somewhere that's not CANADA, I'm NOT mad that there's not a friggin BigMac available when the local delicasy is pork on a stick!

People wonder what the differences are.......In some ways, there are often too many to mention........In some ways, our countries and cultures are interchangeable.........However I think Canadian identity is more based on diversity than love of country.......I admire the Americans for their patriotism, and on occasion despise my own country for it's passive stand on world affairs as well as what happens here in Canada.......

Canada is Canada, and the USA is the USA.........we're different, deal with it.........it's subtle in many ways, but the difference is there......

I'll tell you people what I told my girlfriend's mother (who's a card carrying yank, who married a french canadian guy, and has lived here in Canada for 30 years......) She CONSTANTLY bitches about this country........One day, as a Canadian, as a soldier who would gladly give of my life and time and energy for the sovereignty of our great country and our way of life.........TOLD her.......That if she hates Canada so much, why the HELL has she lived her for 30 years and if she hates it so much, why doesn't she get the fuck out!!!????

Needless to say, it didn't go over so well, and to this day I still pay for it in some ways.....(I'm waiting for Ricin laced piece of cake one Christmas) but I can only stand by for so long in my oh-so passive Canadian way and let people bad mouth my homeland.........

It's a rant in ways, but hey little campers! I'd LOVE to see Canadian flags flying off people's door steps all over the country! Will it happen? Probaly not.........
