Reading abut Arnold running in Cali made me think about how we elect politicians these days. It seems more like a highschool popularity contest than something serious.
I also read in the TO Star a piece by Pierre Trudeau's son Sacha. Does anyone want to bet that he will be running for politican office within 10 years??
I've read a couple of things by and about Sacha Trudeau and he frankly impresses the crap out of me. I don't agree with a lot of the things he says, but he has thought about the problems and is suggesting solutions based on more than his own personal greed. I'd love to see him run for office...maybe it could help snap us out of this shallow sound-bite cult of personality thing.
Regardless of what you think of your present PM , or the next one for that matter - at least you still ELECT them.
This is true - at least ours isnt picked by the Supremes....
What do you think of this Dean guy, Buford? Can he bring some of the Naderites over to the Democrats with his strong anti-Bush stance? Can he do it in sufficient numbers to defeat the little war-monger? Does the Democratic have the balls to let Dean try?
I don't know much about Dean , Kerry is the only one I've heard much about over the past several months. I'm curious to see if General Wesley Clark is going to throw his hat in the ring. Dean seems to be making some headway nationally , but around here people are mostly concerned with NASCAR.
I just watched Bowling for Columbine for the first time last night, and regardless of who becomes the next president - this society is pretty well screwed. I only hope the next president is actually elected because I believe we should still at least give the appearance of being a true democracy.
I don't think there is really any true democracy in this world.
I've heard a bit about Dean, Buford, but so much of it seems not to match things that I've seen him say. He isn't as far left as the mainstream press seems to think he is, just anti-Bush and against the kind of imperialism that goes along with PNAC.
What is there to know. He's American. That says it all. At least he's not another freakin southerner.
There are lots of decent Americans out there, BAB. They may not think exactly like us, but they do care whether they cause harm to others with their actions and they don't want to run the world. That makes them very different from Herr Bush and his oily little buddies.
I think Dean might be one of the good ones, but I don't know enough about him to be sure.
Interesting theory. I don't know about the "lots" part. I work with Americans every day. A <<<fraction>>> are OK. Most are ignorant at best. Allow me to give and example...
US: "I'd like to bet $1,000 on the eagles"
Me: "OK, anything else?"
US: "No. By the way, who are they playing?"
I guess since a lot of the Americans I have contact with are from the northern states, not a lot different from Canadian farmers, and a lot of the others I know are through writing and contacts with artists of various types, my view might be skewed.
I just can't believe that the majority of a first-world nation can be that ignorant and arrogant though. It just seems too surreal.
IMO the northerners aren't nearly as bad as southerners. Bellow Mason Dixson the stupidity is incredible.
FYI it was the sourtherns who started the War of 1812. Northerners didn't want anything to do with it.
Can't argue with you there. I recently stopped the pre-race NASCAR show and switch channels as soon as the race is over because of the brutal jingoism. I don't see that in CART or even in the little IRL that I've caught.
I do have some contact with a couple of people (a photograher and a writer) from the south, but they are both wondering about Canada...and Buford makes three.
Winnipeg used to be known as "The Paris of the Prairies." Maybe should start a sidewalk cafe for American ex-pats?
