There was no word from Ottawa on what position the Canadian government would take. The Department of Foreign Affairs issued a statement Sunday saying only that “the government is still considering a decision.”

By sidestepping the UN and appealing directly to the United States and other countries for recognition, Kosovo's independence set up a showdown with Serbia – outraged at the imminent loss of its territory.

I already heard that Harper was getting hit for not following along with the US but something like this could have deep reprecussions with Quebec. If we were so quick to recognise this, what about Taiwan or another Quebec referendum?

westmanguy @ Mon Feb 18, 2008 8:47 pm

I honestly don't understand this situation, so I don't have an opinion.

But if people want independence, why deny them it? Obviously it has to be a certain percentage. And why would the Serbs want to keep Kosovo, when they obviously want out?

Delwin @ Mon Feb 18, 2008 8:56 pm

I agree with Ridenrain, a very bad idea for Ottawa to recognize them. The people of Serbia should have a say as to whether there country stays together or not. As with Quebec, I am sure there are many questions about national debt, resources, infrastructure, etc. which are still unanswered. We as a nation facing our own seperation issues should not encourage the circumventing of international and constitutional law.

westmanguy @ Mon Feb 18, 2008 8:57 pm

I would like to see Canada together, and Quebec not leave. But I am not an extreme federalist.

If say 60% + of a region want to separate, why would I want to keep people who don't want to be in this country, here?

Its moronic.

Delwin @ Mon Feb 18, 2008 9:02 pm

Then what's to stop the residence of an area from moving to an area of high resources and claiming it for themselves ? Constitutions should not be so fragile as to allow for the disintegration of the country on a whim.

Why can't I declare my cottage nation of Delwinia and have my own laws and rules ? Where do we draw the line ?

ridenrain @ Mon Feb 18, 2008 9:05 pm

It's a political mindfield, that's for sure.

Kosovo has formally remained a part of Serbia even though it has been administered by the UN and NATO since 1999, when NATO air strikes ended former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic's crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatists, in a conflict that killed 10,000 people.

Ninety per cent of Kosovo's two million people are ethnic Albanian – most of them secular Muslims – and they see no reason to stay joined to the rest of Christian Orthodox Serbia.

My gut reaction is that if it keeps them from killing each other and they can live with it, that's fine with me. Both sides are loopy and having the US back Kosovo and Russia supporting the Serbs dosen't help things. From what I'm reading, Kosovo won't have much money or resources so this may be a change in name only.

westmanguy @ Mon Feb 18, 2008 9:05 pm

I think the PQ/Bloc "50.000001% is enough! is bullshit, but if the vast majority (70% +) of a people want out in a region, then negotiate the separation process.

Possibly plan it so the federalist regions stay as Canadian, and you form it so only the pro-sovereignty areas get to leave.

It's an interesting dilemma to be sure, which is why Spain hasn't jumped on board as well.

Nevertheless, because of the circumstances, the new Kosovar Republic will have a lot of from the EU along with a lot of oversight as well.

Canadaka @ Mon Feb 18, 2008 11:02 pm

I also don't know enough about this to have an opinion, but I agree that it could set a bad precedent for other Countires with sepertist movements like Canada, spain, UK.

First seperation, next step amalgamation with Albania. Now Europe has 3 Muslim nations........France soon to follow.

Spain will not recognize Kosovo.. because of the Basques, and Catalonia as well
(its the area around Barcelona)

neither Slovakia, it has 10% of its territory inhabited by ethinic Hungarians, no use giving them any help.

couple of other countries in the EU are in the same boat.. so this is not a unanimous decision... and Russia and now China are in no hurry for this...

Kosovo has nothing, no resources, no factories, no education.. unemployment around 60%, no civil society to speak of. It will become a colony of the EU,
another black hole to dump millions of Euros into.. which is why they will NOT
integrate with Albania.

And another million Muslims into Europe... and there is no such thing as a 'secular Muslim'.. dont know who is writing that bullshit.

The EU said the easiest way to solve this is to bring Serbia and Kosovo into the EU... which neither of these is anywhere near being even close to thinking about entering.. thats all just bs from a bunch of idiots who dont have the slightest idea of what is going on.......

UN resolution 1244 ( i think ) states Kosovo is an integral part of Serbia.. so its more bs from the US and UK,France and Germany.

I am starting to really feel sorry for the Serbs .. since Slovenia left Yugoslavia
they have become truly the whipping boys of Europe, just getting fucked left right and center.

Its not good to beat on people like this.. maybe they get upset one day.

martin14 @ Tue Feb 19, 2008 2:07 am

look for the Northern part of Kosovo to secede from the Albanians as soon as they recognize the Russians will not go to war over this.. and then watch the Serbs rush into the North to 'protect' their citizens.. with guns.

But that should take a few months....or weeks.

ShepherdsDog @ Tue Feb 19, 2008 2:15 am

Canada should mind their own business on this one and STFU. The gov't du jour can't support Kosovar independence while Quebec is still an issue.

It was funny that shortly after NATO troops drove out the Serbian troops, the Albanians, and that's what these ' Kosovars' are, began to shoot at them. This is like allowing Muslim settled areas in Britain secede from the UK.
