Sweden redefined 'rape' in 1996 so that basically one night stands required a signed, notarized contract, or any intercourse was considered 'rape'. Just ask Julian Assange.

So, yes. I'm going out on a limb and say your false perception of the state of Swedish society has been put in place by some group, possible Russians, who have an interest in dividing western society by driving in wedges where they see cracks in it.

So far, it's been the Russians who have shown the willingness and talent to do it. It might be the Mongolians, I don't know.

   

Still makes no sense whatsoever for the Russians to try to elect a Swedish government that wants to restore the Swedish military and populace to Cold War levels of readiness and weaponry.

The Swedish Democrats oppose the EU and to an extent they also oppose NATO membership because the gravitas of NATO has been to support the EU consolidating all European militaries under one flag...and that means the end of sovereignty for the member nations. They'll be reduced to provinces and of course the nationalists oppose that idea.

But the Swedish Democrats DO support the existing direct military agreement with the USA.

Neither situation favors a resurgent Russia that is hell bent on reconquering all of the Imperial Russian territories and all of the former Soviet holdings.

Doesn't have to make sense outside of the context of dividing us. If we are weaker, Russia sees itself as stronger. Russia probably assumes it has no chance at inroads to most of Scandinavia, so it was never getting into Sweden. But it does have a chance in other places, if the west is arguing with itself.

   

No, because Sweden right now has direct military ties with the USA. If they join NATO and NATO deigns to subsume Sweden's military into the EU then Sweden has to fight both the EU and NATO in order to maintain their own desired levels of defense.

Like I said, the Swedish Democrats want to restore Sweden's traditional defense posture which would make Sweden with 11 million people about on par with Canada in naval strength, more than three times Canada's army strength with ~150,000 standing troops, and about four times Canada's air force in terms of fighters and other aircraft.

The Swedes up until about 2005 punched well above their weight and their military doctrine wasn't just to blunt and slow down a Soviet attack but to annihilate it early on with devastating attacks on their forces, their bases, and on Moscow itself if needed.

After the USSR folded they gutted their military and went whole hog on the peace dividend.

Then in 2014 the Russians ran a surprise (for its scale, not its timing) military exercise that simulated not a defensive attack on Sweden, but an all out tactical nuclear assault backed up with a naval invasion across the Baltic and a land invasion crossing Finland.

The Swedes got caught with their pants down because they had NOTHING ready to defend Sweden and it was NATO that scrambled and lit up the Russians.

Three years later the Swedes ran a massive joint exercise with NATO as a demonstration of force against the Russians.

But they're still woefully short on vehicles, spares, aircraft, hulls, and their civilian militia readiness is a shadow of what it had been in 1991.

The Social Democrats are trying to get Sweden up to a NATO standard. The Swedish Democrats want Sweden to be able to hit the Russians so fucking hard they'll regret ever fucking with Sweden. They want Sweden punching above their weight again. In their situation this is a prudent thing to do.

   

Analyzing what Swedish politicians are doing is a fool's errand. Sweden has already been conquered.
