The Observer
The Italian journalist kidnapped in Iraq arrived back in Rome yesterday as fury and confusion grew over the circumstances in which she was shot and one of her rescuers was killed by American soldiers.
The shooting in Iraq on Friday evening, which occurred as Giuliana Sgrena was being driven to freedom after being released by her captors, was fuelling anti-war activists in Italy and putting pressure on Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
'The hardest moment was when I saw the person who had saved me die in my arms,' she said. Her poignant words and weak, haggard appearance as she had to be helped from the jet that brought her back from Baghdad are fuelling national rage.
Outrage as US soldiers kill
Seems to be a trend of incidents with the US military in , well, everywhere they are. Another grave tragedy that will be swept under the rug just like all the "friendly" fire incidents the US is guilty of. Shame on them.
Tough situation if you ask me. It's a combat area where suicude bombs are the norm. From my understanding so far, the troops attempted to halt a vehicle that was racing towards a roadblock they had set up. Please corect me if Im wrong.
Tough spot to be in.
Maybe it wasn't such an accident...
US Attack Against Italians was Deliberate: Companion
Sure domt look good for the americans again...But they are all in a cmbat zone with people who use car bombs as a weapon...
The US military has been trying to silence any press they cannot control since they got to Iraq. They keep killing members of the press. Ever notice how it is members of the press that they don;t agree with? They blew up the al Jazeera offices, they fired a rocket into the Palestine Hotel, now they've tried to kill Giuliana Sgrena. There are other stories of press being silenced, threatened, and killed. There's a definite pattern here.
Just another war crime by the Bush regime.
It doesnt look good! But really who could win in this situation? Lets leave judgement for the outcome of a investigation!
Let's dont jump to conclusions............As the good Rev has already done!!!!
What, another white-wash investigation like the one into the rocket attack on the journalists in the Palestine Hotel?
People who were there have already said that the Americans are lying. It wasn't a checkpoint, it was a moving vehicle. The car wasn't speeding, but moving normally. They had already passed the check-points.
No, it won't be a "white-wash" investigation. This IS a terrible tragedy. It is a war zone though. That certainly doesn't excuse what happened, and it will be investigated. If they do find fault, then certainly those who are responsible SHOULD be held accountable.
The investigation into the attack on the Palestine was a white-wash. The explanation for why they blew up al Jazeera was a joke. You think they'll investigate this properly? They have record of doing so in the past, so we have no reason to suspect they will do so now.
It would be nice though if someone called the administration out on the unpleasant number of journalist deaths in Iraq. As Rev has pointed out, the US has killed a lot of reporters in Iraq, especially those from arab networks.
It's war, shit happens.
This isn't the first time the Italians have had problems with The U.S. military, remember the plane that took out the cables at a ski lift. I hope they get some answers and someone is held accountable.
I am not sure if journalists are being deliberatley targeted but in a war as poltical as this one who knows. it sure would be hard to keep it sercet if they can't hide the fact they like to get naked Iraqi's to play twistor when guests of the Americans. I would tend to blame it on someone fucking up. Blue on blue happens in every war and this one against irregualrs who hide amingst the population makes it very hard. the best soloution would be not to have started this bullshit in the first place.
cheers
