Yup, that just about clears things up. The only difference is for us it's one ship beside another*LOL*
Canada owns the second largest landmass in the world. The longest coastline if you include the artic coast. Within Canada are vast sources of freshwater, an increasing demand. Large oilfields, across BC and alberta, yukon, ninivut and nwt. Canada is one of few sources for enriched Uranium, a rare and powerful commodity. Canada certainly has good reason to defend itself. On top of that Canada has an awesome deal going thanks to the Cold war and the designing of NORAD. Canada in past needed only put up a moderate defence on it's own and lend the US land space to place their early warning radar stations, in turn Canada has access to the most advanced defence technology, including early warning radars, satellite intelligence, logistical support in times of need as well as the disposal of US units-under Canadian command should we need it.
Canada can either play a positive role in the defence of North America, or it can find itself exluded in integrated defence policies with the US, which if Canada tryed to replace on it's own would result in a ruinous defence budget. It's pure stupidity that the Canadian government would jeapordize such a gravy deal as this. In the 1970's Canada, in the process of a major military restructuring had commit a full 40% of it's budget on the military, Canada was able to afford it back then, but nowadays, we cannot afford anything more than 5%?????
5%....WE ALL WISH!!!! It is less than 1%
Thanks navy, I mistyped there. I should really join up so I can edit my posts
we sure dont have a military of a 100 thousand soldiers but it do the job. We dont need one to do wars like the us because even if we had a million mens to go to war our country wont have the cash to send them and bring them back. the only thing im pissed of is that we dont have a military service like other countries, this way we could have at least a million mens with a knowledge for the times where we could need them. And im also tired of the media who smiles when they see a chopper goes down or a sub in shit, how many times the US had choppers went down in Iraq with technical problems, not related with combat? much more then us.
Go Army
I don't know why its so hard for the liberal government to put money into the milltary because we all know that it needs it we need another PC federal government again so the milltary will get some much needed cash.
40% on our budget! are you out of your mind, even america doesnt spend anywhere near that. I dont think that Canada needs to raise their millitary, i think that everyone else should stop trying to make theirs bigger. Why spend money on fighting, when there are starving children all across the world. when people stop dieing from hunger, then i can see investing money to find better ways of killing other people. (i would also like to point out, that it only cost 80 cents a day to feed someone, and 7.5 million Canadian for a missle. in 1997 300,000 people in Somolia died from starvation. on the first day of the second gulf war over 200 million $ worth of missles were launched. that is enough to have fed those 300,000 for 2.3 years)
I am afraid your living in a fantisy world Happyman. We can't aford to lag behind. As for feeding starving children, there are areas of the world where food can only be delivered to starving people under military protection.
fantasy world? how am i living in a fantasy world? you are suggesting that we use 40% of our budget! we can problably do that if we cancle our health care, and schooling, but hey, as long as we have a well toned killing machine. I believe that Canada is one of the smartest countries in the world because of the fact that we dont have enemies. countries respect us because we are always there to help people
Well, I am not too sure where this 40% number came from and i really don't think that there is much here to argue about. The fact is that there are Canadian peacekeepers in parts of the world where children are slaughtered because they were born of a different tribe. You use Somilia as an example of starving children. Somilia is a country that is run by men with guns. These men will gladly kill to take all the food, not because they are hungry, but because they want the power. You want the food to get to the starving children then you have to send it with good guys with guns to make damn sure it gets there. Do you know who the good guys that put their asses on the line to feed these children are? That's right, it is often members of the Canadian military. For some reason there is a misconception that the Canadian military and Canadian peacekeepers are two different entities. THEY ARE THE SAME PEOPLE. Therefore, so that our boys are not leaving home once a year for six months, and are carrying proper equipment to keep themselves and others safe the military needs more money. I don't see the arguement here.
I know that this is a heated discussion but please do some reading about this and be informed.
