Question for our Military personal on here
Why do Canadian forces in Afghanistan risk life and limb to defuse road side bombs?
My guess is that these devices are crudely made and it's easy to do so, but that doesn’t take away the risk that there isn’t some little grease ball hiding in the sand with a detonation device waiting for someone to get close to it.
We have some member already on deployment that posts here.....
Be patient and see if they replay... None of them are online right now.
Opps i better clear something up before the spinmisters attack, i don't mean just leave them sitting there, but couldn't these bombs be blown to hell from a safe distance or does that just happen in the movies?
Short answer: It depends on the threat the IED poses. They'll only disarm if there is a threat to people or themselves, hospitals and the like. Next in priority is key infrastructure such as bridges, telephone exchanges etc. If the IED's are located in a remote area and they aren't wanted for int gathering they'll simply be destroyed in situ (BIP - Blow in Place).
To assume that these devices are crude is to badly underestimate the capability of these bomb makers. The bastards have a lot of experience in this and are very cunning. They also unfortunately improve with time. What you're seeing on the TV news is simply the sources of explosives (Artillery/Mortar rounds being most common and abundant) you aren't seeing the mechanisms for security reasons. As for the command detonated camel-turd bomb, the EOD guys hope the cordon group has their eyes open and can spot the bastard before he pushes the button.
I understood what you meant... I am sure those guys would have picked up on it....
I've seen clips of soldiers firing at roadkill to see if any bombs were hidden in them... apparently, that's a hiding spot they like to use
Too bad Shep is on vacation... that's his job, though it's post war.
It was one of mine as well since my first "H" course in '83.

Thx SprCForr, your answer was short and to the point. And your right I did underestimate these devices from what I saw on TV.
Canada, don’t ever stop supporting our troops and their mission, and do what ever you can to support the families left at home. Work an extra hour or 2 so a mom can take their kid to an appointment. Offer to take the kids to a hockey game or a movie, parents that suddenly find themselves allow need time outs also. There’s so many little things we can do that really are huge in the end.

Why do Canadians seem to worry that their soldiers' lives might be in danger? Isn't the jobs of soldiers supposed to be to put their lives on the line?
Obviously, having a job diffusing bombs is BOUND to be a risky job. There's no point in trying to diffuse bombs if you know they are safe to start with. The whole point of diffusing them is that you KNOW that are unsafe.
Canadians need to look at British soldiers in Iraq - 103 have died so far.
Because Canadian don't see their military as an expendable force...

Perhaps we don't want our soldiers dying? Are you saying you want your soldiers to die? He is trying to find out if it is a neccesary risk. He was wondering if there is a better way to do it.

Thats why he was wondering why we couldn't blow them up from afar.

Canadian soldiers don't need to look at British soldiers. They don't ned to listen to a pompous ass like you. Perhaps British solders should take a look at our training, or perhaps our snipers? 103 British soldiers have died in Iraq, havent like 12 Canadians died in afghanistan? Maybe British soldiers should take a look at Canadian soldiers.
12 Canadians dies.... a big part of them by friendly fire....

Been there and done that, myself. But I'm not a EOD specialist so I just shoot the hell out of them from a safe distance (I prefer to use tracers to ignite them if possible) after people are cleared away. The Iraqis did some of this stuff back in 91 but not nearly on the order of what they do now. Frankly, back then we thought it was all in good fun and damned clever of them. Had I caught one of the guys doing it then I'd have bought him a coffee and chatted him up about it all. Now I'd be more inclined to gut shoot him.
My recommendation is still to just shoot the hell out of them from a safe distance instead of risking life and limb to prevent the destruction of Iraqi homes & businesses.

The knee-jerk reaction here is for me to say something nasty in response to this...but I see where he's going.
In war people get hurt and die. If you can't stand the losses then stay home.
God forbid that the Western nations should have to fight a REAL war ever again because it seems we just don't have the stomach for a real fight any more.
I'm afraid we'd just surrender if faced with losses like at Dieppe, D-Day, Slapton Sands, Iwo Jima, Saipan, or etc. ever again.
Even if we were winning.
